6 month regression??

My DS was a poor sleeper as a newborn, then at 4 months improved exponentially and was going up to 8 hours straight with only 1/2 wakings. At 6 months, he suddenly regressed back to waking every 2-3 hours and has been doing this for the last couple of weeks, and always needs feeding back to sleep. I've tried other methods of comforting him but he just cries til he gets boob... I know I need to find another way to resettle him / teach him to self-settle but I just don't know where to start (and when I'm exhausted at 2am it's so hard not to just offer boob!)

Is 6 month regression a thing? Will he grow out of it? Or do I need to think about sleep training?

Sleep issues at 6 months tend to be related to calorific need. You probably need to feed (milk feed) significantly more in the daytime. Make sure you don't replace milk with solids, maintain and increase milk intake, with solids on top of that. If milk feeds decrease at weaning, you often see the reimergence of night feeds as a way to make up for the calorie deficit.
