Sleepyhead pods

Hi all,

I don't own a sleepyhead but I recently shared a post regarding safe sleep from the lullaby trust which specifically states not to use pods or nests for overnight sleeps.
I was hit with a load of people telling me that sleepyheads were the best thing they used etc and the guidance was wrong.

Please can someone confirm if sleepyheads specifically are approved by the lullaby trust? I don't think they are but I just seemed to get a lot of backlash from sharing that..

I don't see it being safe personally and I won't be using one, I'd rather struggle getting my son off to sleep in his Moses basket than risk his safety.

Thanks! X

This is complicated I looked into it recently. Sleepyhead as a brand used to exist and it specifically said on their website that they were suitable for overnight sleep.
However sleepyhead sold in the USA under a diff brand called Dockatot. Their standards / rules are different so even though it was the exact same product, when they were sold in the USA they were advertised as not suitable for overnight sleep.
Sleepyhead as a brand does not exist anymore, they have been completely taken over by Dockatot, an American brand, so they are all sold under the USAs guidance which is that they should not be used for sleeping.

So the exact same product which people may have bought a couple of years ago with very specific guidance overnight sleep was ok, now says it’s not! But not because anything happened, just because of the diff country’s rules. Took me a lot of research and Googling to work this out as I let me first 2 sleep in them but for my 3rd someone pointed out it wasn’t recommended now and I was so confused as I was certain it had been and I had specifically checked!

You’re correct, no nest is approved by the lullaby trust for unsupervised sleep. Companies make claims about them being safe but these are difficult to assess, one of the risks as well as suffocation is overheating. People get defensive because lots of people do use them and there’s an argument that a dangerously overtired parent is a bigger risk but we all have to make our own decisions.

When my first was born they were being marketed as safe for overnight and by the time the second one came they weren't.

I bought one for my 5 year old when they were ok for overnight but then the guidance did change and the midwife when I had my 1 year old last year was very clear they were for daytime supervised naps only. I don’t quite understand why a sleepyhead is different to a Moses basket if I’m honest (I can see why a crib with total ventilation and no ‘walls’ is better). I will be following guidance with my newborn and putting him in the crib but I also thing you have to wear up other things and if he won’t settle there then I will use the sleepyhead at night (I usually put it in the crib so he feels a bit more cuddled).

Lullabye trust would not endorse a sleeping area with raised padded sides tbh. Same as they don't recommend baby bumpers. They can be a suffocation and overheating risk.

To be honest, the Lullabye Trust would not support a bed with elevated, padded sides. Similarly, they advise against infant bumpers. They may provide a risk of overheating and asphyxia.

While many parents have positive experiences with products like the Sleepyhead for naps or supervised fnf sleep, the official safety guidelines from organizations like the Lullaby Trust and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) advise against their use for unsupervised, overnight sleep.
