Help with creating a new sleep association

When I used to breastfeed my baby I fed him to sleep most of the times or put him in a sling to sleep. I have now gone cold turkey which he's adjusted to and he now's goes to bed by me rubbing his back whilst his head is over my shoulder . I don't mind this being his sleep association , the only issue I have is with having to do this during a few night wake ups . Im exhausted because he still wakes up at night . I really thought stopping feeding to sleep with stop his night waking but it's made no difference. We Co sleep so when he's woken up I've tried putting him to sleep next to me by ribbing his back and shushing him but he starts crying so I physically so I have to get up late at night or early hours in the morning to walk around for ages rubbing his back or put him in a sling . How do I transition from this to being able to shush and patt him next to me so he can fall asleep again easily .
Im desperate , im writing this at 3:30 whilst holding him to sleep for the third time tonight . If I knew this would have happened I would have kept breastfeeding because I've not slept properly for days.

I can't really help because i am still feeding to sleep but wondered how old is your DC? How do you know they actually aren't hungry/thirsty when they wake up? Maybe this is why they wake up again during the night?

How old is your baby? It makes a difference in finding the best way to solve this.

A dummy would be the best answer, instead of feeding to sleep.

Accept that whatever method you use to settle baby to sleep at bedtime will be what you also need to do in the night. Consistency is key. So if you want to patt/shush to sleep in the night you need to do that at bedtime too. There will be crying.

@lemonPartA My baby is 13 months and I give him weetabix before bed so he's full but when he does wake up I offer him water or expressed milk in his sippy cup which he will drink. But some times he refuses to drink so he's not always hungry or thirsty when he wakes up
