What time does your 8 (nearly 9) yo go to bed?

Just as the title suggests really...

My ds is 8 just now, 9 in June.

He currently goes to bed at 7:30/45. His friend has just come round asking if he can go out and play but he's already in the shower.

My dp thinks I should let him stay up till 8:30.

Mine goes up at 7.15 usually asleep by 8pm. But he is awake at 6am on the dot every morning. So I'd say as long as they sleep later/are getting enough sleep then a later bedtime if it works for all is fine.

DS1 is 9 in the autumn. 8pm except Cubs night (Cubs finishes at 8). He’s a lark so awake 6:30 even at the weekend. Put him to bed any later and he’s simply miserable the next day. DS2 will probably have a later bedtime by 8 because he will sleep in if tired and (as a 5 year old owl) has been in bed since 7:30 and is still chattering to himself now.

@Igotnewbarstools

He has mentioned it a few times, his friends definitely stay up later, but I came up to check him half an hour ago and he was fast asleep. Maybe I'll start telling him to go in the shower at 7:45 and then he will go to bed after that. So 8/8:15 and he'll think it's a compromise! Thanks all.
If he actually goes to sleep then it's fine and no point interfering with it. We moved DD's bedtime later because she just wouldn't fall asleep and just sit there staring at the ceiling, getting upset she wasn't falling asleep. She's 10 now and goes at 9(still won't fall asleep easily some nights) and wakes up at 7.

On holidays/weekends she can easily go up to 11 pm with no issues, including the next day.

Mine goes up at 8 and either reads or goes straight to sleep. Lights out by 8.30.

He sometimes stays up later at weekends and watches a film with us but rarely beyond 9.

sd17 · 11/05/2021 21:45

My 9 and a half year old dd gets into bed at 8 on weekdays, and usually reads until about 9, sometimes slightly later. This has been her routine since she was 8

sd17 · 11/05/2021 21:46

She's also an early riser, usually awake around 6am. But it seems to work for her, and if she's tired she'll just stop reading earlier

PragmaticWench · 11/05/2021 21:48

Upstairs at 19:20, into bed by 19:40 and lights out by 20:00 for my eight and a half year old.

Igotnewbarstools · 12/05/2021 07:31

He's very excited about this later bedtime/shower time (he has been warned though - if he gets all emotional it goes straight back to old time!). Although it's absolutely tipping it down so not sure if he'll get out to play later!

Thanks all. Interesting to know.

Mine goes up around 7/7.15, I read a chapter or two of her book (st the moment we are on HP5 so that's taking some time). That takes us to 7.45/8 then she can read independently til 8.30. I never go back up and ask her to stop - she can carry on reading if she wants but usually she stops at 8.30 for sleep

I'd consider later bedtime for playing out at weekends; but not school nights.

sd17 · 12/05/2021 07:42

@BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz my dd and I are also on HP5. Taken soooo long to read out loud!

Marty13 · 12/05/2021 07:43

My 2yo goes to bed at 20h30 and 11mo at 20h00. They are up by 8h-8h30 in the morning. I honestly can't imagine them in bed by 7h30, especially at age 8. But every child's different.

SavingsQuestions · 12/05/2021 09:16

Marty13 presumably that might be because yours are getting up so much later too! If a child has to be at school by 8-8.15 you're dialing everything back a few hours.

So if your 2 year old needed to be up an hour ealier, an hour earlier for bed would be 7.30. It evens out!

Thebookswereherfriends · 12/05/2021 09:26

My 8yr old has a bath etc between 6.30 and 7 and then both me and her dad read to her and then she reads her own book until 7.45, lights out by 8. She does not get to sleep easily and is usually not asleep before 8.45, but I’m reluctant to push it all back a bit because she wakes at 6.15/30 without fail, so I don’t feel she really gets enough sleep and at least she’s resting.

This will change if/when they need to be at school by 8-8.30. Lots of families, especially if they are working, need to leave the house by 7.30 or 8am.

My God. How do you get them down so early.

My dd 8 (nearly 9) is supposed to be in bed by 9.30 but is usually still emitting a torrent of words at 10.30.

There is just no way she'd be tired enough at 7,8 or even 9!!!

A lot depends on when they are waking. Even my eldest rarely slept past 7:30 when she was younger. The younger one took hard consistent work to help him stay in bed till 6 or so, was probably 5 before we got to that point. Until he was 11, a late night was never followed by sleeping in - it was typically 3-4 days later that he'd manage to catch up lost sleep. Evening concerts were a big challenge to his system!
