Colic starting at 9 weeks??

DS has been in a lot of discomfort when trying to pass wind or pooing over the last few days - high pitched crying, legs drawing up, waking himself up and being inconsolable for anything up to an hour before he is able to get it out - about 6 times a day/night, and much worse pain at night. He's been checked out by doc and there doesn't seem to be any clinical reason - so she's said it's colic, and talked about immature digestion at this age. But we've had no trouble up until now, so this doesn't quite make sense to me.

Has anyone else had 'late onset' colic, or could anything else be causing this? Any tips on easing the discomfort (am using Infacol to no effect)?

Or should I just be grateful that there are only a few weeks until the mythical '12 week' mark when it all supposedly disappears?

Mine just bawls all night and has done since 3wks, but is also ultra farty.

Try bicycling his legs, then bringing each knee up and across the body, then bring them up together and twist his lower body left then right, then bring both knees up to his chest. Hard to describe but do it a few times every day, it really helps with stuck bottom wind .

If he's mega sore a warm bath relaxes him (the tension seems to make it harder to pass) but make sure it's nice and deep and hot enough that your HV would frown .

Also, please don't get excited about 12 weeks. I held out for it thinking my life would be like a fairytale therafter but, er, no. Sorry but I wish someone had told me!

Every sympathy for you. Ds1 had it from 8 - 16 weeks and ds2 from 6 weeks til 24 weeks (he was a preemie so that might have had something to do with it). It's hideous and all I can advise is getting a break from it whenever you can, and I agree that having a warm bath might help him. We used to wonder around the house all day and most of the night patting ds2's bottom and eventually a massive fart would come out and he would stop for a bit.

For shop-bought possible solutions you can try the Dentinox equivalent of Infacol (though maybe last), gripe water (various manufacturers) and Colief. What works for one baby doesn't work for another so you may need to try them all, each for a few days, and find no success with any (sorry).

Colief is expensive (about £10) and is a bit of a faff to use. If it works, I think you may be able to get it on prescription.

Loads more threads on colic on the feeding chat area if that helps. Some people swear by fennel tea, cranial osteopathy, lactose-free diet, baby massage, keeping vertical for 20-30 min after daytime feeds ... lots of things to try - good luck!
