Where did your newborn sleep during the day/night?

Hi everyone,

I'm about to become a first time mum and have found myself a little overwhelmed with where baby will sleep during the day and night.
I've tried other forums on google but there doesn't seem to be a general consensus and I don't want to spend thousands on different places for her to sleep.

During the night some say straight into their cot but have it in your room, or is a next-to-me crib more beneficial? Some recommended a Moses basket in your room until they are old enough to go into their own room?

During the day, Moses baskets, bouncer/rocker seats?

I know it's different for all mums and I feel like I should already know this but I'm just looking for advice and what worked for other mums.
Any product recommendations would be really appreciated too.

Thank you ❤️

In the day: on me, in a sling, in Moses basket downstairs. (although first baby, not so much that third one.)

In the night: in bed with me, or sometimes in Moses basket/carrycot next to bed.

Don't overthink it in advance; some of its personal preference, some of it's what the baby will tolerate. It's very normal for newborns to want to only sleep on a person for a while, or else in motion in the pram. If you have a pram with a detachable carrycot you can move this round the house.

It's useful to have a Moses basket or carrycot as a safe place to put the baby down downstairs. Upstairs you can have a basket, some kind of Cosleeping cot, or if you're planning on breastfeeding you could consider just Cosleeping. Newborns generally don't settle in a full-size cot and I never used mine for baby sleep until they were 4 months or so.

Mine both slept in the day on me, in the pram or in the Moses basket near me downstairs in the day.

In the night they slept in a crib next to the bed. We occasionally co-slept but I preferred not to.

Mistressofmany · 30/03/2021 12:59

I don't think sleeping in a bouncer is recommended, though they might fall asleep sometimes they shouldn't be used for that as need to lie flat/ have unobstructed airways. The Moses basket will be outgrown long before you would use a separate room, in my experience! I think they last about 3 months. Very handy for putting into different rooms though. A crib (bedside or not) lasts till around 6 months and was our choice. During the day we used the carrycot that came with our travel system. There are guidelines for sleep safety that I would choose to stick to but beyond that it's personal preference, and what suits your baby.

MarshmallowsOnToast · 30/03/2021 13:08

We bought a bassinet for upstairs to sit at the end of our bed (an Inovi cocoon because it was cat safe) for nighttime sleep.

But for the first couple of months it was a combination of using the bassinet, him falling asleep on me or we co-slept.

During the day, I would bring his bassinet downstairs into the living room and again it was a random mix of falling asleep on my lap on a cushion, in his bed, on the sofa in a sleep nest (always supervised) or in the swing.

For the first few months it really was just anything that would work at the time to get him to give in & sleep. Some days he would tolerate his bed, others not.

Natsku · 30/03/2021 13:13

Mine slept in the baby box, brought it downstairs for naps (until he switched to outside naps in the pram) and then at night put it next to my bed. Also used the carrycot from the pram inside sometimes for naps (because tricking him into thinking we were going for a walk sometimes sent him to sleep!)

Spied · 30/03/2021 13:14

During the day in the first few weeks we used a moses basket then progressed to a travel cot that actually made life in general much, much easier as it became a kind of play pen.
At nighttime we carried the moses basket upstairs and actually placed it in the cot next to our bed when dc were tiny. After them first few weeks we placed them directly in the cot next to our bed.

candlemasbells · 30/03/2021 13:18

Moses basket at night. Just a cheap Asda one. Ds used his for 7 months when he couldn’t lie flatvin it anymore. Dd uses hers for 4 months.
DS then slept in my bed. Not making that mistake again. Dd sleeps in the pram of a big old silver cross pram.
In the day they slept in the pram downstairs
It’s difficult to lower a sleeping baby into a cot or travel cot without waking them.

yomellamoHelly · 30/03/2021 13:19

Eldest had a basket (though didn't last long) in his own room. Quite often shared a bed for naps during the day.
Dc2 and 3 were in a cot in the room they shared with dc1/2. Quite often took them into spare bed in that room with me in the middle of the night. With dc2 would take them to bed with me during the day when I got the chance. (No such option by the time dc3 came along.)

Mumdiva99 · 30/03/2021 13:26

Eldest had moses basket in our room but ended up in bed with me. (There was no room for the cot in our room or a next to me cot....although that would have been my preferred sleeping option.)

All 3 slept in the buggy/pram a lot. On a nice day it could be left in the garden. By the time my youngest came I had a double buggy for walks....the old single pram/buggy was left up in the living room as somewhere safe to put him to sleep away from other kids. He was my best sleeper so did spend a while in it!!

Day. Moses basket In lounge or nearby or swing chair Night Moses basket in our bedroom till 6 weeks then cot in own bedroom

Conditionconditioncondition · 30/03/2021 13:37

Sling, sleepyhead on sofa or pram during the day

Snuzpod at night

Dandelion3 · 30/03/2021 13:41

Are you planning on breastfeeding? If so look into safe bed sharing, as 50% of babies have bed shared by the time they're 3 months. I REALLY wish I'd looked into this before having a baby as all the messages I'd had were not to bed share so I felt really stressed until I did my own research and found out actually I could do it safely
(my baby didn't want to be "put down" this is normal for loads - most - of babies)

Have a look on the basis website

www.basisonline.org.uk

I wouldn't spend a lot on expensive cribs etc maybe get a cheap Moses basket and if you've a pram bassinet you can give those a go for downstairs / to put baby in safe place but you may just find baby just wants to sleep on you

Twizbe · 30/03/2021 13:43

I personally dislike Moses baskets so never got one for either.

At night we had a next to me crib which lasted until 6 months/ they went into their own room.

During the day they either slept in their bouncer or on the floor on the play mat. I had one that had little fold up walls.

Queenfreak · 30/03/2021 13:47

We bought everything going! She slept on me during the day, and in bed with me at night (following safe 7!)

jessstan2 · 30/03/2021 13:50

With me or very near me at all times.

MrsTophamHat · 30/03/2021 13:51

Through the day:
-on me
-Moses basket
-pram

At night:
-Moses basket then next to me after about a month.

20viona · 30/03/2021 13:52

Purflo nest on the sofa or in the swing during the day. Never had a Moses basket didn't need one.

ThatsNotTheTeaHunty · 30/03/2021 13:53

Next to me are great. I didn't attach it to my bed but had the sides up and he only came out of it at 8 months because he stood up in it! The reason I didn't have it attach to my bed was because I was worried I'd throw the duvet over him.

In the day he had short naps in the bouncer but a long nap is not recommended in the bouncer for smaller babies. Usually his naps were on me in the day.

ThatsNotTheTeaHunty · 30/03/2021 13:55

Also didn't like the look of Moses basket looked like too much loose fabric for me.

Skyla01 · 30/03/2021 14:03

@firsttimemum111 the choice is certainly overwhelming! A lot might depend on chance / what your baby likes to do.

At night my baby (9wks old) sleeps in a Moses basket next to my bed. Chose this because my friend lent me the basket (I bought a new mattress). I was too scared to co-sleep.

During the day she sleeps soundest in the sling (great for me as hands are free for getting stuff done, I've also started going out for short walks). She will sometimes sleep on someone, and also in the pram. Lots of baby like the movement. Mine tends to wake up once home from a walk but as others have said you can use the pram for naps too if it is flat.

3WildOnes · 30/03/2021 14:19

In the day my babies either slept on me, in the sling, in the night or in a Moses basket. At night they slept in the next 2 me crib or in bed with me.
From four months they slept in their cot in their room for most naps and the first stretch of the night.

otterbaby · 30/03/2021 14:25

We had a next to me upstairs where she slept at night for the first 4 months. Then her sleep went tits up so now we bedshare. The next to me was great especially if you're breastfeeding.

Downstairs, we had a Moses basket which she slept in approximately 6 times. I wouldn't waste your money on one.

1990shopefulftm · 30/03/2021 14:30

He had a Moses basket downstairs but it got too small very quickly so we used the pram carrycot.
He's was in a next to me crib for 3 months and now sleeps in his cot next to our bed at night as we want him close but aren't comfortable with cosleeping due to his size and the issues my mum had with my sister.

Piccalily19 · 31/03/2021 08:16

My 8 week old has a snuzpod upstairs next to my bed, highly recommend them! I keep the sides up though as like a previous poster said I’m worried I’d throw a pillow over him in the night.
You can take the top off which we did for the first week but the lugging it up and down stairs got annoying.
A friend got us a Moses basket for downstairs which he’s about outgrown already (he’s on the 90th centile for height though)
Annoyingly he loves napping in his bouncer but I too have heard they’re not the safest for naps so I normally attempt to move him to his basket when he’s asleep.
We’re going to get a travel cot for downstairs now he’s almost too big for the basket

ShyTown · 31/03/2021 13:53

I think moses baskets are utterly pointless as babies tend to outgrow them long before they are old enough to go into their own room. Mine have slept in the big cot from day 1 (in our room). For naps downstairs we use the pram.
