3 month old and struggling to go back to sleep after being fed in the night

My 3 month old wakes at night, and doesn’t seem particularly hungry. I then can’t get her to go back to sleep in her crib. She will sleep but only on me. It’s the same in the day so I can’t nap when she does , she will only nap on me or in the car.

I’m starting to feel so fed up through exhaustion. I know it’s normal for babies to wake in the night but it’s being up for hours on end in the middle of the night that’s starting to get to me.

I have no experience but wanted to say you're not alone with no sleep. I'm 36wks pregnant and itching like hell so I'm on night 2 of literally noooo sleep, after a month plus of 3-4hrs, up to for 2, back for 1hr.... Thankfully I'm WFH but I'm struggling!

My DD is only 6 weeks but was having this problem too. My HV made me start wrapping her in a blanket when she falls asleep feeding before putting her down and this works some of the time. Just wondering if your baby might be cold too?

Chocolateoatmilk · 21/03/2021 02:51

I worry she’s too hot - it’s hard getting that balance isn’t it!

@WisteriaSuperior - have you discussed the itching with your midwife? If could be a sign of obstetric cholestasis which would need monitoring.

Sorry, OP, I don’t have any advice, though much sympathy... Am not getting much sleep at the moment, but in my case it’s a puppy not a baby Confused

WisteriaSuperior · 21/03/2021 02:58

@Tuliptulip no I plan to call tomorrow as it's only come on the over the weekend. I skipped a shower on Friday and thought I that might be partly to blame, plus sheets and pj's that needed a clean so washed them, has a shower this morning and Epsom salt bath this evening but I'm still the same tonight. I think it could be cholestasis to.

Infants being overly warm reduces their arousability threshold which is why warm babies tends to equal sleepier babies, and why it’s a risk factor for SIDS.
It’s very difficult OP when you’re so exhausted, and knowing that it’s normal is reassuring but doesn’t actually help you physically feel any better!

If you can, I would work on trying to get her napping during the day in her crib. It may seem counter intuitive as the night times are what you find harder, but in the day often we find ourselves able to deal with the fussing and grizzling of a new routine more so than at night. If you’re able to get even an hour or two spread out throughout the day, it may be enough to keep you going at night when she just won’t settle.

I honestly don’t know how hanar, she really genuinely won’t. It’s a struggle to get her to nap at all in the day (I seriously think she’d stay awake all day without some effort on my part!)

Hope you managed to get a bit of sleep OP - I second what @HanarCantWearSweaters said about naps, though it sounds as if you’re trying to get those sorted. Presumably you’ve tried putting her into the crib once she’s asleep on you? How about sleeping in the pram (for daytime naps)? If you can get her to sleep with the movement then at least you can then have a dose yourself...
@WisteriaSuperior - yes do that, and just ask for a blood test. My levels were pretty high although for me the itch wasn’t too bad. It was the itchy palms which were a giveaway. My baby was fine, but it’s important to know, hence pushing for the blood test.
