10 month old not sleeping

My granddaughter is ten months old and has never just dropped off to sleep. She sleeps for 40 minute naps if rocked, held or breast fed but at night the longest she sleeps is two hours.
They have tried sleep training using controlled crying but after two weeks they had to give up as she ended up getting too upset.
Any ideas how to lengthen the night sleeps? The parents are sleep deprived.

Hi. I’m so sorry to hear of your families struggles. I’ve literally posted today on the parenting section about my difficult 9 month old and we are in an identical situation. 45 minute naps (1.5 hours if I’m next to him) and 1-2hours overnight needing to be breastfed at each wake up. We actually haven’t tried controlled crying - not that I am completely against it, just that I suspect the outcome will be the same: he won’t get the memo to go to sleep and just keep on crying. Sadly after spending too much time on Facebook and Instagram it seems to be really really common. A lot of people seem to think babies need to be able to fall asleep independently to sleep longer, but this isn’t always the case - some still wake up ++ despite this. I’m afraid I have no solution as it seems to be time for a lot of people. I’m currently maximising sleep by cosleeping so I don’t have to fully wake and get out of bed, but I would like to change this relatively soon as it’s not sustainable long term when I am back at work. I’m hoping you get some useful advice for your family as it really is lethal being so sleep deprived xx

Thanks, it is somewhat comforting to know our little one isn’t unusual.
