Anyone used or got views on those bunny clock things to keep kids in bedroom longer?

Would really like DS to stay in bedroom til 7am. What age should I try this - he's 2.3 and fairly good at rules once I insist on them.

I was thinking of one of those nightlight style ones, and leaving him a 'morning bag' of toys and a little snack in case he's hungry. He wakes at 6 or 6.30 so it wouldn't be ages.

It feels mean, but he's been so awful at sleep and I'm pregnant and just want to get some rest in before we do it all again as I'm having proper flashbacks of those early months of sleep deprivation and currently I just know I can't face it without some decent months of sleep beforehand.

Has anyone found them useful, and at what ages did people use them?

TIA

When the bunny ears pop up it makes a big noise and would wake my DS up if he was still asleep.

I'd consider a light times to come on at 7am instead, so it doesn't wake him up if still asleep, yet is a clear signal its ok to come and find you.

we have the light-up bunny one (as opposed to the pop-up ears one) and it's fab

ds1 is 2.5 now but has had it for 3 or 4 months - got the hang of it straight away. was a very early riser but now has only called us "pre-bunny" a handful of times

john lewis stocks it. best £35 we've spent in ages

Bunny clock has worked well for us. Worked from about age 2.5 maybe.

ours was £20 + P&P from Great Little Trading Company I think.

Oh Tutter thats exactly what I wanted to hear! And Fennel!

I don't think its likely he'd sleep later than the alarm, so the ears thing wouldn't be a prob, I was just thinking that the nightlight version would be better now its dark in the room, but a light timer might be better, as then he'd have a light in his room in the dark mornings - thanks TTE.

Oh what a dream - we're just only now cracking the nighttimes (he slept through last night!) - I think I'll cry at the idea I could theoretically sleep from 8pm-7am!

I didn't know there was a light up one. I shall get one!

Kayjayel, I'd still avoid the pop up ears one as one day he will start sleeping longer. Maybe when he starts pre school or scchool. Our DS did and is VERY attached to his bunny, so I have to pop the ears up when he's asleep, and then he checks the time in the morning with a torch. He waits till 7am before getting up, but is mystified as to why the ears are always up before 7.

Fennel · 07/11/2007 21:21

Our bunny ears pop up without waking the children, if they are asleep they stay sleeping but if they are already awake they know they can get up.

Not meaning to sound unhelpful but this might raise a smile - I know of someone who bought one of the bunny clocks for her early-waking 2 year old. Next morning the household was woken by the yells of the child, "Wake up bunny!!! Wake up! It's time to play now!!!!"

we use a wee light attached to a timer like tte. it is working wreally well for us. ds would occasionally sleep for longer and so we didn't want something that would wake him up if asleep. we've only been using it for about a month - ds is 3.3 yr but before then we didn't have a problem with him waking early.

kayjayel · 07/11/2007 22:03

I think I liked the look of the light one better than the bunny ears anyway. But I'm leaning towards the nightlight idea on a timer. I like the idea of hoping he might sleep later!

The stories of chlidren shouting at bunnies and working out how to wake them up sound unfortunately just like DS so I might have to institute some reward system for using it properly.

Tutter thanks for the link, will check it out. off to watch Heroes - staying up far too late when i should be taking advantage of sleeping child!

I have a friend who's DD was petrified of the bunny.

First night she woke up and laid awake intently watching for the bunny to wake up.

The ears popped up with a start and stunned her. She woouldn't have it in her room after that...

Pollyanna · 07/11/2007 22:07

my dd pulled the bunny's ears off
