Nursery ‘doesn’t offer naps’

Just went to see a nursery and the manager was running though the day schedule and said they don't do naps, so if I want my child to have a nap I need to pick her up and take her home at that time.
It’s a montesorri for 2-5 year olds, so some kids need to nap still. It seems like a lovely nursery otherwise.

Is this strange?

Eh? That seems weird to me. DS is younger granted and is just at a normal nursery but if he's tired he's allowed to nap.

DinoHat · 04/03/2021 12:08

Really strange. You’d expect most 2/3 year olds to be given the option.

My daughter is only two and definitely needs the nap! The whole point of needing to put her in nursery is so I can work in the day Confused.

I believe under the EYFS it is a requirement to provide a suitable space for children to rest or nap. I'd check the regulations yourself, when I worked in childcare we always strongly advised parents to make themselves familiar with the EYFS

Nurseries that are attached to schools, so run set hours, often do this. For example they run one session 8.30am-11.30pm and a second session 12.00pm - 3.00pm. Children either do mornings 5 days a week or afternoons 5 days a week, without flexible hours.

But if this is a private nursery then it is very unusual.

Lots of nurseries that only take from 2 or only do school hours don't accommodate naps.
My children went to a preschool from 2 and there was no scheduled nap time or cots/beds available, but occasionally children would fall asleep in the book corner or on a cushion.

It is. They are breaching EYFS. This isn’t an acceptable policy, neither is requiring children to be out of nappies but there is precious little enforcement. Besides it tells you all you need to know about how child friendly it is (or isnt!)

I would find another nursery.

Is this full day care or 9:30-12:30 nursery school?

SillyOldMummy · 04/03/2021 18:33

Yes that's strange, and rubbish. Find somewhere else.

Findahouse21 · 04/03/2021 18:34

My daughter's nursery didn't offer a space for naps - they take from 2. Nothing was raised in their ofsted inspection either.

ineedaholidaynow · 04/03/2021 18:36

Is there a place where they can curl up and have a snooze if tired?

Gerla · 04/03/2021 18:36

That's strange. My children had naps until the age of 5, definitely wouldn't have been able to cope at 2 without one.

Spillanelle · 04/03/2021 18:36

That’s bizarre! Do they actually have parents who pay for a full day and have to go and collect their child in the middle of the day for a nap Confused

WannabeOT · 04/03/2021 18:37

Montessori's don't tend to be the same as nurseries, they're like preschools. I would be surprised by a Montessori offering the same hours as a nursery or long sessions for two year olds. If this is for a full day of childcare I would question 1. Their authenticity to Montessori education and 2. That of course a young child would need to nap if they're there all day so that is obviously silly

Cantthinkofaname99 · 04/03/2021 18:46

My DS's nursery only accept children from 2 and they don't have any facilities for naps, it's only small and in a old village hall. It's a fantastic nursery and the nap thing isn't an issue for us as DS stopped napping when he was about 20 months. I think because they only have children from 2 there aren't many people who rely on it as their only childcare for the whole day, there are lots of children who only do mornings or afternoons. I think occasionally some of the children curl up in the book corner and go to sleep, my DS would never do that though!

Find another nursery, not individualised 'care' at all.

Poor kids ☹️
