Baby room temp 13'C the last two nights, what to do!?

My 6 month old DS is in his cot in the room immediately next door to us. He shares this room with my DD (2.5years). She sleeps like a log and doesn't feel it but he has had a couple of terrible nights. According to the monitor, the room was at 13'C, despite having double glazed windows etc (it's an old Edwardian house and is draughty). He sleeps in a vest, baby grow, grow bag and 2 cellular blankets on top.
I know they say that babies' hands and feet are always colder but his hands have been like absolute ice blocks. His chest and the back of his neck have felt okay (not hot, not cold) but his hands and his forearms are just beyond cold. Last night I had to bring him in with us at 4am and I just rubbed his hands and arms until they were warm. He slept like a log as soon as he warmed up.

Other than leaving the heating on all night (it's a 5 bed house, too big to heat the whole thing every night)- do you have any suggestions of how to keep him a bit warmer? I've brought his cot into our room this evening as our room has less windows and feels warmer. He is appropriately dressed according to the guidelines. Any bright ideas please!

Like, permanently move them, I mean, because this will be a summer issue, too, where they'll get too hot in this room for the same reasons.

Leave the hearing on but turn it off in most of the other rooms. He can't be too layered up, plus the air needs to be warmer.

Also live in a cold house. Portable heater was crucial when DC was baby. You can set the thermostat to a safe temperature and put the timer on so that it comes on between a certain time. We set the temperature to 18 and timed it to come on just before midnight and turn off around 5am.

We have a Honeywell smart heating system in our house and each room has its own thermostat controlling the radiator. It means we can have some rooms at 19 degrees and others at 5 to save heating the rooms we are not using.

The system was in before we moved but it is amazing and would mean you could just heat the baby’s room at night.

LouisLitt · 09/02/2021 22:09

Bloody hell that is freezing. Why can’t you turn off the radiators in other rooms?

Orangesarenottheonlyfruit · 09/02/2021 22:11

Completely against the grain here but all our bedrooms are about that temperature during winter. Kids slept like, well, babies. A cold bedroom is healthy. Kids used to sleep in a vest, babygro and sleeping bag thing with a blanket if very chilly.

@AiryFairyMum

Keep him in with you. He's only tiny.
This. Mothers regulate their baby's temperature.
HercwasanEnemyofEducation · 09/02/2021 22:16

I'm another against the grain here but ours slept in this temperature just fine.

Aerielview · 09/02/2021 22:20

I wouldn't be keen on leaving an electric heater on all night in the kids' room.
Maybe a fleece onesie/pyjamas on top of the babygro, and a warmer sleeping bag.

tara66 · 09/02/2021 22:20

it is too cold.

This ^^ 13 is far far too cold for a baby.
espressoontap · 09/02/2021 22:30

I have a 5 month old. I have her in with me, that temperature is far too cold. Even for your older child.

Lotusmonster · 09/02/2021 22:30

Get thick curtains, get radiator valves installed please sort it out. No wonder he can’t sleep, freezing extremities cause actual physical pain and he can do nothing about it.

Regularsizedrudy · 09/02/2021 22:31

Turn the heating on Jesus Christ

Lavanderrose · 09/02/2021 22:50

People here are forgetting it’s not just about keeping the body warm it’s also about breathing in cold weather which could be harmful.

HercwasanEnemyofEducation · 10/02/2021 05:09

Breathing in cold air might be harmful at - 10 degrees, it's not at 13 degrees. How do you think children in scandi countries survive? As long as they are wrapped up, 13 degrees isn't that cold.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 10/02/2021 05:19

Turn the heating on and turn the radiators in unused rooms off or down

blackcat86 · 10/02/2021 05:20

Oh wow that's really cold and well below the recommended temp for baby. Just put the heating on! We have a 2.5 yr old and have it on set to come on if the temp drops below 16.5 so we aren't wasting money if it isn't needed. The idea that you can afford a 5 bed house but your baby is cold at night is horrible.

IHaveBrilloHair · 10/02/2021 05:34

Christ alive, just heat your house overnight.
Yes, it costs money but such is life.
I have to as I have brittle asthma and no amount of clothing or electric blankets stop me breathing in cold air.
I send Dd money for her heating for the same reason.
You've a small baby and you needed to be told this? Hmm

Susanthepig · 10/02/2021 05:41

Our house dropped to 11 yesterday night. I did put the heating on (app on phone so super handy) but dc slept just fine.

Plus it always crosses my mind that years ago houses didn’t have the heating they do now and nobody worried. My mother was parked in the garden to nap in the pram no matter the time of year.

B1rthis · 10/02/2021 05:55

Co-sleep. Everywhere except the West does it without hesitation.
Your breasts go up/down in temperature by at least two degrees to regulate your baby's temperature.
Breastfeed your baby to sleep to keep them warm.

Insertfunnyname · 10/02/2021 06:10

@LadyLouOf2 jojomaman do special 3.5 tog bags which are good for winter too. We have a similar house!

We also thermaboarded the walls which was revolutionary. Worth looking at ready for next winter.

lilylongbottom · 10/02/2021 06:13

Growsuit under the growbag. They are babygrows with long padded arms which normally cover the hands.

They're not cheap but a good investment for use in winter if you've a a cold house and you use growbags!

My electric heater caught fire. I’ve never trusted them since, I certainly wouldn’t be leaving one all night in my children’s room.

If you can’t afford to heat your home to a level your baby isn’t uncomfortably cold then downsize!
