What time is really early?

9-yr-old goes to bed, in theory, around 8.30. 14-yr-old, who gets up about 6.30 for a paper round, in theory goes at 9.30.

In fact this hardly ever happens. Regularly add an hour on to each bedtime. (14-yr-old could malinger for England!)

Does this help?

My 13 yr old just started going at 9:30. Used to be 9:00. Usually takes him 1/2 hr to fall asleep.

My ds doesnt really like going but he will because he is pretty much used to it. I feel he needs as much sleep as possible to be awake and alert for school. He needs to be up at 6:15-6:30 am. I have always been quite strict on bed routines however I do allow him to stay up a little while longer on occasion for a special show.

I think the easiest way to accomplish is to start off doing it early while their small.

DD used to go to bed around 11pm, getting up at 7.30ish. Now we've moved to a place where school starts at 7.50am she sometimes goes to bed about 8.30 but gets up at 5am!!!! HTH

my 13 year old goes to bed at 10 - 10 -30 and goes straight to sleep no messin - i think children find their own time to some extent , it used to go up with their ages really - age 6 - 6 o'cclock, 7 - 7 o'clock etc.. but once they hit 12 ish i think 10.30 is late enough

mears · 02/10/2002 23:05

My 15yr old is still bl**dy well up despite being told to GET TO BED. He is in his room now but I can hear him faffing about.Drives me crazy. He always sleeps in. 13yr old usually goes straight to sleep around about 10-10.30pm. 12yr old is hardly ever asleep before 11.30 despite being in bed - just checked him and he is playing with toys he got for his birthday today.
Thank God 8yr old is sleeping

GRMUM · 03/10/2002 07:21

My 8 yr old has a bedtime of 9.00pm latest and he always falls straight to sleep.12 yr old dd bedtime 10.00pm but if she is tired will go earlier.13 yr old ds bedtime is 10.30pm but he always tries to stay up later- I think just so he can go in to school next day and say that he went at ....time.They all have to get up at 7.00am-school starts at 8.10am. Having said all that I must admit that most greek children don't have "bedtimes" as such and often stay up 'til they drop! Whenever they don't have school next day they go more or less the same time as us....in fact I have been known to be the first in bed on more than one occassion!!!

My 14 yr old goes to bed about 10 during school days and he is up before me at about 6.30. It can be later at weekends depending on what is going on or what is on tv. My 10 yr old is a nightmare going to sleep and getting up and that is partly because we have just had a new baby and she doesn't want to miss a thing or feel excluded. She is supposed to get ready for bed at 8.30 and be asleep by 9.00. She needs to get up for school at 7.00/7.30. Again, she is allowed to stay up a bit later at weekends.
