Farting interfering with sleep

My DD is 7 weeks old and from the start has been very gassy, at both ends. She is exclusively breastfed.

She has recently started to sleep in her Next to Me cot rather than on me, which is great, but her sleep (and mine!) is really disturbed by all the farting. She sleeps for stretches of 2 hours on average at night but is pretty much constantly straining, writhing and grunting during that time. Occasionally she starts to get distressed or show signs of waking and I need to pat her back to sleep, but mostly she sleeps through it. It just doesn't look comfortable or restful! And I think she could sleep for longer stretches without all the farting - she managed 3.5 hours the other night when she wasn't farting for some reason.

I'm currently a week into a dairy elimination diet but it doesn't seem to have changed anything yet. I'm trying to think what I ate (or didn't eat...) on the day she slept peacefully for 3.5 hours but can't remember!

She doesn't seem to experience the problem so much when she's sleeping on me - I guess because she's on her tummy and tends to be in a more vertical position.

Has anyone else experienced gassiness to this degree and can provide advice? I don't know if she'll just grow out of it or if there's anything else I can do to help her.

Oh I remember this with my two...they both wriggled and writhed uncomfortably in their sleep at that age, grunting all night and I couldn’t sleep a wink for terror they were in pain. They both grew out of it...around 12 weeks or so...but my goodness it was stressful until they were able to sleep peacefully. I was advised it’s normal as their digestion system is still developing and apparently more common in preterm babies. It didn’t make it ANY easier to deal with but I can assure you it didn’t seem to do them any harm (they were still contented and smiley when awake and they DID grow out of it (although it felt like an eternity at the time). 💐 for you!

DS is nearly 6 weeks and exactly the same, made worse recently by the fact he’s got thrush.

I find a dummy helps “push” through the worst of the wind.

Ah that's interesting, DD was slightly preterm at 36+3. Hopefully she will just grow out of it soon!

I've realised that I ate a lot less gluten on Thursday so wonder if this made a difference? Might try it today... Can't hurt!
