6 week baby not sleeping in the day

My DD is 6 weeks old, though was 4 weeks early so can be considered 2 weeks developmentally. She sleeps pretty well at night in general - she will only sleep on me but generally sleeps around 9pm-9am in 1-3 hour stretches and goes straight back to sleep after a feed. Her feeds can be quite long so this normally works out at about 8 hours overnight.

However, her daytime sleeping is really hit and miss, and as a result she never sleeps the 16 hours in a day that they are supposed to at this stage. It's usually more like 10-12 hours. I read that babies her age are supposed to be awake for an hour maximum, but she can easily go for 4 hours+ and I still really have to work to get her to sleep after that. I try everything - rocking, humming, feeding, sitting her in a vibrating chair. Sometimes one of these will get her to sleep for a few minutes and then she wakes again. The sling or pram are quite reliable but I feel her quality of sleep is not as good then.

She doesn't seem to show signs of distress from over tiredness. She's not a particularly happy little bean in general - she seems to suffer from digestive issues and I am currently eliminating dairy to see if that helps. Sometimes her inability to sleep seems linked to digestive discomfort but mostly when she is wakeful for long periods she is just staring wide eyed around her.

She seems to be meeting some milestones - tracking toys with her eyes / head, lifting her head when on her tummy, starting to reach out for toys. She isn't smiling yet. I'm worried that the lack of sleep will hold back her development though or flood her little brain with stress hormones. Should I just trust that she is getting the sleep she needs and just doesn't need that much, or should I be trying something else?

What kind of digestive issues? It takes about three weeks for all cows milk proteins to leave your system, health advisors usually use it as a last resort im told.

She seems to suffer a lot with wind at both ends (she is breastfed) which often gets trapped, and also shows some symptoms of silent reflux. She often thrashes at groans / cries when feeding. Her nappies are also quite mucousy / slimy, though they are a good yellow colour. I've only been off dairy for 3 days or so.

@MissHoney85 I'm going through this now with my month old DD. How's things been for you since? X

Still not great! She usually has a longish nap in the sling with my DH in the morning then 2 or 3 30-45 minute naps in her cot through the day. She won't sleep in the sling for me and we don't live somewhere where we can do a lot of pram walks. She's in bed for nearly 12 hours but very frequent wake ups. Averaging about 11 hours sleep a day according to my app 😴

Her digestive issues seem to have calmed down so I don't know what the cause is. I veer between worrying obsessively about it and trying to relax. I'm doing all I can, you can't make them sleep.

I think the digestive issues really cause them havoc bless them! Mine is sleeping well this morning (NEVER HAPPENS) not sure I've done anything different, breastfed her and she fell asleep on me so I've just not moved rather than try to get her in the moses basket. She slept only 4 hrs yesterday in the afternoon and that was broken sleep, lots of rocking and shushing when she stirred. She also slept badly last night so maybe it's just all finally caught up with her!
Im having issues with my milk supply, she's not getting enough I don't think and she's not really gaining much but she's not loosing. My issue is that when she's awake she's burning all those milk calories 😢 and not storing them. I wonder if she's also not sleeping because she's not got a full tummy?

Yes I'm not confident in my milk supple either and wonder if hunger is a factor. She does plenty of wet and dirty nappies though and is sticking to a centile, even though it's two lower than where she was born. Might start a formula night feed, though everything I've read says it won't make any difference!
