Preschooler waking everyone up 5:30am humming Black sabbath

Yes really 😂 Not always black sabbath, sometimes something a bit more normal like twinkle twinkle! I'm getting really fed up of it though and can't seem to sort. He's not being naughty, he doesn't get out of bed, just lies there humming and slightly rolling himself (which is weird but how he's always been) and humming /singing. I have tried explaining. Mild telling off. Reward charts (doesn't ever achieve sticker) and not bothered. He's got a gro clock set for 6:10am. He's permanently looking tired in the day and fell asleep in the armchair at 5pm yesterday. He goes to bed at 6:50 asleep by 7:15. He's 3yo, 4 in May. Wwyd?!

Have tried later bedtime 7:30 worked for a bit then back to normal. Have not reeeeeaaally tried earlier bedtime (which would be classic of course) because it is very hard to actually achieve getting him to bed earlier. But I am going to try tonight.

No ideas I'm afraid but im sitting here giggling. Good taste in music! Our DD is 4 in March and is particularly fond of singing the Stone 'Can't always get what you want' at the top of her lungs while being wheeled about in the bike trailer. Has gotten us more than few amused looks and comments.

No advice but you have our sympathies- our little one always wakes up singing too- this morning it was the theme tune to Wallace and gromit Grin. We just leave her to it. Does it before bed too, think it's her way of winding down. We still put her to bed for some chill out time after lunch, sometimes she naps, sometimes not.

That's very cool. Maybe I need to change tack here and add to his repertoire 🤔

Hilarious sorry!

loz12345 · 31/01/2021 08:38

I am going to get mine to listen to more music, this seems a much better way that the way my ds who is 3 wakes me up at 5 every morning, he either forces my glasses on my face or bounces on me till I move - sorry no advice

Lammergeier · 31/01/2021 08:40

Which Black Sabbath song specifically?

DaisyHeadMaisy · 31/01/2021 08:41

I had this over Christmas, DS2 took a shining to Good King Wenceslas (lapsed Christian but I must sing carols more than I realised!). Every morning we woke up to 'hmhmhmhmhmhmhm, on the feast of Stephen' Grin Definately adding to his repertoire has helped, we just get a bit more variation in tunes now.

isurvived3under2 · 31/01/2021 08:42

Sounds like he's finished sleeping...

FusionChefGeoff · 31/01/2021 08:47

The advice often given is counterintuitive - try an earlier bedtime. Idea is that the sleep cycle will end at 4.30 ish at which point body goes 'nah still night' and goes back to sleep. Whereas 5.30 is too close to dawn so he wakes.

Worth a try?

Authenticcelestialmusic · 31/01/2021 08:48

Thats funny. Two of mine sang black sabbath songs from being tiny. One of their current favourite band is Alestorm!

Authenticcelestialmusic · 31/01/2021 08:49

Sorry posted too soon! So I’d avoid Alestorm unless you want to be woken to the sound of pirates each morning!

Yes will be trying that tonight. I know this would be a bit of a sleep classic. But before 7am with a getting on for 4yo who is playing with his older sibling is hard to achieve... Will do a cooked lunch today to facilitate!

Actually you know what i might change all of our clocks now. We're all just at home and working flexibly so no one will know!

Great song to wake up to!

Our pre-schooler is STILL on Away in a Manger. Every morning. Drives me nuts!

Hermanfromguesswho · 31/01/2021 09:00

Sounds like he is an early waker and stays in bed as asked when he wakes but is just a bit bored?
Can you give him something to do so he doesn’t have to hum to entertain himself? Books he can read first thing (picture ones if can’t read), an MP3 player with comfy headphones if he loves music, colouring etc. Something he can do quietly in his room until his clock hits morning time.

Toocold · 31/01/2021 09:03

I feel for you! It’s 6-6.30 with the small one usually here and I’d love to say he’ll grow out of it but my eldest is nearly 16, still gets up at the crack of dawn! Glad I don’t have to deal with that one though!

OutwiththeOutCrowd · 31/01/2021 09:05

Tell him it's not very rock 'n' roll to be awake at that time unless you've been up all night drinking absinthe?

Buy him an electric guitar with headphones in exchange for a cessation of the humming?

Competitively hum Twinkle Twinkle yourself to drown out his warbling?

mootymoo · 31/01/2021 09:12

Mine at that age went to bed at 7.45pm, asleep at 8pm, woke up at 7.30am. 15 mins a day to try and shift it bed time or go cold turkey and on a Friday night keep him up and busy until around 8.30 so he's tired to sleep in, repeat Saturday, by Sunday he should be so tired if he's fighting the change in times he sleeps properly if you send him to bed around 7.30.

A lot of the times when young kids wake early it's because they don't need as many hours sleep as their parents think (or hope!) and one day isn't enough to change because they get a set body clock
