How long did your dc scream for when you decided to ditch the dummy?

Ds1 only has it for sleeping but is quite attached to his dummy.
I asked him earlier if we should put them in the bin and he was quite happy, gave it to me and said yes,so I gave him a book instead,to have in bed.
At first it was fine but we've had screaming for the last 30 mins or so and I'm wondering whether to give in and give him back the dummy or persevere and hope that by tomorrow,he won't be asking for it.
I feel really mean taking it off him but I think he'll sleep better without it and he had a mouth infection recently which I don't think the dummy helped in any way.

Thanks.
He is now fast asleep in bed but I'm not looking forward to tomorrow nap time.

Well,he woke at 6am and wanted his dummy.Normally I would give it to him and he'd go back to sleep for about another hour.Instead,I tried putting him to bed which wasn't working so I brought him in with me incase he woke ds2.Dh was already at work so he stayed in out bed for about an hour, before we got up.
He doesn't actually have a nap on Tuesdays as we go to toddler group,so at least he won't be asking for it this afternoon.
Am hoping tonight won't be too bad either.

we ditched ours around the same time, think they screamed/cried for about an hour 2 nights on the trot, and that was it. It was more about weaning US off them and not using them to make our lives easier at night when they woke. Now they don't have a 'noo noo', they are not dropping them in the night, so not waking for them to be replaced - easier all round.....

Once they've gone they've gone, i found it easier to stick to my guns cos they weren't in the house anymore, so i couldn't give in even if i wanted to - being 2 and a half i could kind of reason with them too "you're big boys now, you don't need them, only babies need them"....and now if they pics of themselves with dummies in they point and say "noo noo mummy, i'm a big boy now, don't need noo noo".
