mine has on average 3 or 4 hours of sleep during the day, over 3 or 4 naps.

That's great that she is sleeping well at night - I am sure that you will agree! My baby is eight months old and sleeps 7-7 but her sleeps during the day have always been 40 minutes in the morning, two hours after lunch and then another 40 minutes from about 4 - 4.45....is your baby happy in the day or are they cranky....the only reason I ask is becuase if my baby was not sleeping during the day she would be very very upset??

Papillon · 29/10/2007 19:12

do you have a sling, she might go to sleep if she is next to you and soothed by the movements you make. Put her in a sling and go for a walk, or put her in a pram and take her for a walk.

What do you do in the day to encourage sleep?

kittenbaby · 29/10/2007 19:19

take her for walks, put her in the sling, put her in the motorised swing,hold/cuddle her and rock on a rocking chair lay hr down in the cot
thats what i try

she does seem to bet a bit cranky thays why i think she could do with a nap
she still bf alot v frequent feeds

It is very unusual (IMO) for a baby that young, even though they are sleeping well at night to not sleep during the day....does she empty both breasts at each feed....is she in a feeding routine or does she just 'graze' (so to speak) all day?

kittenbaby · 29/10/2007 19:33

well i think she emptys both breast, they just feel the same to m tbh except 1st thing in the morning when then hurt and leak !!
i fed her on demand she is not in a feeding routine

Papillon · 29/10/2007 19:35

so she sleeps through the entire night, or is she grazing at night?

If so she still thinks she is in the womb!!

karen999 · 29/10/2007 19:38

I can only speak from experience and in no way feel that I am telling you what to do...if you are bf on demand then that is a good thing...they only trouble I feel by doing this (and I have) is that they just get used to 'grazing all day' and then are quite happy to wait for the next 'graze'.....I was mix bf and ff my daughter at 4 months but only very 3 hours....I did this becuase I was basically feeding her (and carrying her) all day and I just could not do it anymore...it took a few days to get her into a routine but it was worth it...but please do not think that this is what I am telling you to try or do. I can only speak for myself...

my nephew never slept much in the day, 20 minutes max in a stretch in his first year.

mummynumnum · 29/10/2007 20:48

My dd never like naps in her cot and it was a real battle and I did not persevere, but went for lots of walks, drives instead. She always went down well at night. Nursery got her to nap, much to my annoyance. However, all of a sudden she has really enjoyed going up for a morning nap and afternoon and it is so easy to get her to go. She is now 15mths! although she has started waking at night again, so perhaps I shouldnt let her nap. Why is it so hard???

LyraSilvertongue · 29/10/2007 20:52

Mine slept for at least 4 hours during the day at that age. No daytime sleep in such a young baby is very unusual imo.

Reesie · 29/10/2007 21:00

Mine didn't hardly sleep in the day either at that age - I'd look longingly and enviously at other mums and their babies that had all that time free in the day to get stuff done. I tried and tried to get her to sleep but nothing worked. In the end I gave up and now she naps much better on her own accord!

mummynumnum · 29/10/2007 21:01

Same as.

lomondgore · 29/10/2007 21:44

My dd is 4mths old too and she has a morning nap and an afternoon nap, either one long one of 2hours or two smaller ones.

I find that on days when she doesn't nap she gets very cranky!

How is she if you just lay her down in her cot for a while? Does she cry? I would maybe try putting her down after she has been awake for a couple of hours and see what happens. She may just be happy to lay there for a half hour or so. (try a mobile or musical cot toy) Get her used to having some quiet time if you can and she may eventually fall asleep.

Make sure you use the time to put your feet up!

Heated · 29/10/2007 22:21

I realised with nb's you need to look for the cues for sleep - I think it was that prescriptive Gina Ford woman who said by the third yawn they should be in bed. Other signs are sudden fidgetyness and rubbing of eyes - otherwise they can go beyond tired and are just wired!

You can give the cues for sleep and put them down at the right times (both of mine used to have a 2 sleeps at about 10am and 1 or 2pm). They slept in daylight (rather than drawing the curtains) as didn't want to confuse their successful night time sleeping. Quite often they'd grizzle themselves off.

kittenbaby · 29/10/2007 22:27

good point lomondgore id prob spend the time doing chores, no she doesnt feed at night i really would be knackered if she did

but im worried she doesnt get enough sleep
