Weening white noise

Hi, I have a 5 month old daughter and we have been keeping white noise on for the whole night and now when white noise is not on she wakes up almost instantly. Has anyone got a tried and tested way of weeding your child off white noise when their child wakes up when white noise isn’t on? Also is there a best age to ween her off white noise?

I've never heard of anyone doing this before.

MyloC · 01/01/2021 13:55

My 18 month old still has white noise on all night and I don't plan on stopping until he tells me to.
If it's working and they are sleeping well I wouldn't stop.

purplejungle · 01/01/2021 13:56

I've seen advice to gradually turn it quieter and quieter until they don't need it anymore

2 year old with noise on still

2.5 year old still has white noise all night.

3.5yo still with white noise on and 6yo with audio books or quiet music. We find it useful, drowns out the noise if one is up in the night or up too early, neighbours in the terrace, noise on the street. Why's it an issue?

My 20 month old still has white noise all night.
Our house is very creaky and missing doors as it’s mid way through renovation so it blocks out me and DH sounds when DD is asleep, so I don’t think we’ll stop using it yet.
Also blocks out the sound of very very noisy rooks that live in our neighbours chimney and start screaming at 5am Smile

Agree with others you can just keep on with the white noise!
If you want to reduce it then I would:
Start playing it at the latest stage of bed time so babba gets the idea of falling asleep without it. Ie settle them in bed wait for them to look sleepy or relaxed before playing the music
Play it quieter and quieter over time
Do the sleep training of shhhushing patting back but no talking no cuddles no eye contact.... and do those things first then put music on as you walk out so baby isn’t have the white noise be the biggest association with falling back to sleep but still has the comfort of it

Indecisivelurcher - I have read online on a few sites that we should turn white noise off once they are asleep and that it can cause them to develop auditory processing disorders so which is why I’m looking for ways to wean her off white noise but at the same time for her still fall asleep

I found it ineffective after a while so I switched to quiet audiobooks which I turned off when they fell asleep. My three year old doesn't have anything now unless he's struggling to sleep (rare) and my 8mo baby has it about half the time.

That's interesting. I'd never heard that. I'll probably turn ds's off. He won't miss it. Dd has a meditation cd on all night at the mo rather than white noise.
Indecisivelurcher · 01/01/2021 18:29

My answer to how and when to cut down would depend entirely on how well your Dd sleeps! If you're up a lot, then later. If they sleep well, try it.

bookish83 · 01/01/2021 18:44

Turned if off cold turkey at 10 months. Took about 15 mins to fall asleep the first time and fine afterwards! Actually think baby sleeps heavier without it

I can't imagine playing it for several years though, surely it will be harder to wean off?

Indecisivelurcher · 01/01/2021 19:30

Probably depends on the child, @bookish83. Ds is 3y7m and I just left his off, he went to sleep same as usual. Hope the milkman doesn't wake him up before his usual( 5:45! 😬😬😬😬

Indecisivelurcher · 01/01/2021 19:31

Sorry my phone froze up, but the many faces do reflect my sentiments! Ha

Indecisivelurcher · 01/01/2021 19:33

However my 6yo Dd would I think have big problems going to sleep without something to listen to. She's not had white noise for a while though, she changes between guided meditations for children, and xylophone versions of the Foo fighters!

FizzingWhizzbee123 · 01/01/2021 19:43

My 3 yr old still has it and I often sleep to it myself too as an adult! I’m not remotely concerned about it being used long term

Yes definitely. We have a good sleeper so far (fingers crossed) and only had white noise at home, naps in the car/pram no issue.

Just seems like the longer its used the harder weaning off could be.

No judgement here! We use a dummy for sleep...

cheeseandwine2019 · 03/01/2021 13:06

I only stopped as my daughter was starting nursery at 13 months. We gradually turned the volume down over a week or so and then just switched it off. I was amazed - she didn't notice at all!
