Help! Is rolling over why she's waking up?

My dd had just become a good sleeper but is now waking me every two hours. I think that I've worked out why - she's just started to roll over onto her front in her sleep, but she doesn't seem to be able to get back again. She's also got bright red cheeks and so is probably teething, but she isn't crying as if in pain, she just sort of yells until I roll her onto her back. Sometimes she's got so awake I have to get her into bed with me until she goes to sleep. Is there anything that I can do to stop this? I am so tired.

Have you tried a sleeping bag?- dd (8 mos) can't roll over in hers!

Scatterbrain · 27/09/2002 12:22

My DD did the same at that age, and she was already in a sleeping bag I'm afraid. It didn't last too long though (3-4 wks tops) and then she learned to roll back again, or more usually went back to sleep on her tummy.

Could well be the teething waking her then she's grumpy coz she's the wrong way round !

That sounds about right. Teething can be a right nightmare! And it goes on for ages too! Try rubbing some Dentinox (or some other stuff) on her gums when she wakes, as this might sooth her gums enough to let her get back into a deeper sleep. If it's really bad, a drop of Calpol might help the ache.

Can't help with the rolling I'm afraid, as my ds only rolled in his sleep when he was rolling both ways. However, I did post a query at one point, because he liked sleeping on his front at 9 months, and I was worried about SIDS. People told me that, if they are rolling onto their tummies, not to worry, as the fact that they can do it themselves means that they are safe. HTH

I echo the sleeping bag advice - if you're worried about her overheating in one, then maybe get a really lightweight summer one and still use blankets? The teething thing is a nightmare, isn't it - I spent much of dd's infancy thinking 'is she teething, isn't she teething, why, oh why is she crying if she isn't teething, and if she is teething, where are the teeth?' She could just be waking and thinking 'waah, why can't I see my mobile/bedroom walls....Mummmmmmy'.

Hope it's a short phase, anyway, ionesmum. Mine slept much better when she was a bit more mobile, if that's any help.

Thanks for all the advice. Dd is in a grobag already, up until recently it did stop her rolling but she seems to have mastered it now! She's in a towelling one and I think that her arms may have been getting cold (she just wears a bodysuit) so I'm going to try her with a long-sleeved top too. I still don't know about the teething thing, she's showing all the signs but not really crying.

Thank you all once again, it's so nice to know I'm not the only one who's been through this! Mind you, I do feel guilty about her being cold.

I'd really like a little more advice if possible, sorry for asking. I've put dd in a long-sleeved bodysuit and l/s t-shirt - do you think she might get too hot? I have found that a l/s bodysuit on its own doesn't seem to be enough but I don't want her getting too hot. Also, her grobag is size 6-18 mo and so there's a lot of spare material which is getting wound round dd when she rolls over. Is there anything I can do to stop this?

My dd is back in her winter weight gro-bag with pyjamas and a vest on - still has cold arms in the morning though ! I try not to worry so long as her little bod is warm !

Looks like it's nearly time for the heating to go on "constant" already !

Re: size of the grobag, I never found it to be a problem but I guess you could fold the end over and tack it up ?

Bozza · 28/09/2002 13:51

Unfortunately my DS was still waking me when he rolled over at 18 months Or is he lazy and am I a mug?

ionesmum · 28/09/2002 22:59

Thanks, Scatterbrain.

Oh Bozza, don't say that! Dd is driving me crazy, she woke again last night because she got stuck, and then took two hours of cuddling to get back to sleep. Then tonight, as soon as I put her in her cot she's rolling herself over and waking herself up. I've given up and she's watching the football with dh. I am soooo tired.
