is it safe for DD to sleep on front?

Hi there! any advice welcome for first time mum...

I awoke this morning to find my DD (6 month) asleep at top of cot on her tummy. I have her in a growbag and a rolled towel down the side to stop her rolling. The concern is not only was she face down into the matress, but she has not yet mastered how to roll back!!!

Any ideas and should I be worried?

Thanks

My dd is 7 months, at 6 month she started sleeping on her side and would sometimes roll onto her front. My HV said not to worry about it, you can't keep getting up and turning them over. Sometimes I find her face down with her bum in the air.

A good way to see if she's alright face down is put your own face on the mattress and see if you can breath through it.

I think if they put themselves into that position then they are fine. She should be old enough now to be able to turn her head to breathe. DD1 slept on her front from this age and HV said not to worry as she always put herself into that position - like your dd she couldnt always turn herself back onto her back but could turn her head to the side. DD2 sleeps on her side and has done for a few months now (8 months).

Can she lift her head up easily when she's on her front? I think that by this age if she can move herself into that position and sleeps well then it should be fine. I might be totally wrong but I think it's when they are too tiny to move themselves to prevent suffocation that its a danger

thanks all, she woke alot last night, but that was due to teeth and full of cold. I have removed her teddies from the cot now as well.

Keep you posted!

I have chosen to put both my DDs on their front from birth. They are completely able to turn their heads even from that age and my view (although i know it is entirely personal and i am not advocating this for others merely trying to offer reassurance) is that they sleep better that way. SO really do not worry about it. The annoying thing for me is that my DDs learned fairly early to roll onto their back from their fronts but not the other way round and really cant sleep that way up so are like stranded insects!

My HV told me that the advice to put them on their backs was mainly due to overheating (you lose more heat from your tummy so if it's against the mattress it's not so easy for that heat to disperse) rather than breathing difficulties. I've no idea whether that is right but maybe be extra careful not to dress her in too warm clothes. Though by 6 months they are far better at regulating their temperature so it's probably less of a concern than when they are small.
