Farty baby can’t sleep!

Hi there,

I’m looking for help/advice or at least the consolation that I’m not the only one who has this problem. My 8 week old has generally been a decent sleeper and I’m now trying to put her down at a more consistent bedtime, but over the last couple of weeks in the evening she has become increasingly farty and we’re now in a situation where by the evening this has built up and it takes hours to get it out so she can sleep.

I usually after about 30 minutes sleep she starts to wriggle and writhe in pain as she passes the wind, I’ll go in and do tummy massage and bicycle legs to her her pass it out, but it just keeps coming. Last night it was 9.30 until 1am!

She’s breast fed and I always burp her, I’ve also tried infacol and gripe water, but I feel like they have little effect.

Anyone have any solutions? Or has anyone been here too and can tell me when this phase will start to pass? It’s horrible seeing her in pain and exhausting trying to help her through it.

I would take a look at what you're eating. Perhaps dairy is giving her issues, or maybe broccoli, cauliflower, etc.

Have you made any big changes in your diet since this started? Could she be showing an allergy?

Other than that; are you doing bicycle legs and tummy massage before the issue starts? Maybe try it after her last feed? And maybe they during the day as well.

Gripe water really only worked in the old days when it was alcoholic. Its pretty useless without the alcohol!

My little boy was exactly the same. Started using gripe water after every feed and now is so much happier and can fart as he pleases with no pain!

My LO was exactly like this. I thought all the grunting and squirming was because she was trying to fart but it turned out she had reflux.

However, the grunting etc did pass around 12 weeks. I didn’t find infacol or gripe water any use.. dentinox helped a bit though.

Following as my nearly 6 week old DS is the same! We are using gripe water which sort of settles his tummy. But in the early hours of the morning he will still wake and be mega farty! Hopefully someone has some good advice for you OP @mrsmcbitsy :)

BioGaia Protectis baby drops. It’s a probiotic that reduces gas build up.
