Confused about dressing baby for bed 😓

3 week old baby. Have tried cellular blanket tucked in under the mattress, have tried swaddling - baby hates both. The only thing he will sleep in is the GroBag (I think it’s called the Snuggle? The one with the arm holes that can button up). Our bedroom is 17-18 degrees. What should I be dressing baby in under the GroBag? 😓
I spend the whole night paranoid that he’s too hot or cold 😓

I can't add photos but I used to always Google "what to dress baby in at night" on images. It comes up with helpful charts to suggest what to dress them in depending on temp. I would be doing long sleeved vest and long sleeved babygro under the sleeping bag. Make sure sleeping bag neck isn't big enough to come up over their face. I checked temp on back of neck or chest. Try not to worry too much, it's a science!

What tog is the bag you’re using? Is your baby an adequate weight to be using it?

RWK29 · 24/11/2020 23:47

@Jenda Yeah I’ve been looking at loads of charts but I’m still paranoid 🙈😂 he was a big boy at birth so the bag fits him really well 😊
Should have added that it’s a 2.5tog sleeping bag too 😊

I used a vest and a babygrow at that age with a cellular blanket or a large swaddle muslin folded in two. Babies don't need as much warmth as you think- they will soon let you know if they're too cold!

Queenofthemadouse · 24/11/2020 23:48

On a 2.5 sleeping bag it would be a long sleeve vest only for me. Or a short sleeve one if the bag has sleeves

RWK29 · 24/11/2020 23:49

@IntoP20 Just realised I hadn’t added that info. It’s a 2.5tog bag and he was a chunky 8lbs 11oz at birth so he’s definitely big for it 😊

So my DS is in a short sleeved vest, sleepsuit and 2.5 tog bag. That’s in a house without the heating on overnight

5zeds · 24/11/2020 23:53

Start with vest, babygro, grow bag and see how he does.

NelliePig · 24/11/2020 23:54

Our bedroom is always the same. 2.5tog sleeping bag and a babygrow. If your unsure verge on cold than hotter, a baby who is cold will wake, but overheating is a risk factor for SIDS xx

RWK29 · 24/11/2020 23:54

@Queenofthemadouse That’s what I had started off with but he hated the blankets etc covering him! Just kicked and kicked and kicked until he was free of the covers then cried. I’ve currently got him him I’m a babygrow (no vest underneath) and the sleeping bag 🤔

That sounds fine to me. You soon get to know your baby - my DD1 has always run hot, so if we followed the suggestion charts for her she'd boil! If you can reach in to feel baby's chest (hands/feet aren't reliable), they should just feel comfortable, not too hot. Always err on the cool side, they'll let you know if they're too cold but too hot is a SIDS risk.

littlejalapeno · 25/11/2020 00:01

Sounds about right, we have a 2.5 tog, a baby grow with closed feet and the temperature starts off at about 20, but drops to about 16 before the heating kicks in at 5. So have to balance out a bit warmer at the start of the night for a bit cooler later.

Feel the back of your babies neck and if it is very sweaty or hot then baby is too hot.

If baby is too hot and the temperature remains constantish overnight I would drop down to a long sleeved legless baby grow with your 2.5tog, ideally the temp with that should be 17-19 degrees. I’m sure you’ll be fine!

Thanks everyone 😊 little one seemed to have a VERY comfy night and I’m now feeling like the worst mum in the world as DH, baby and I all slept 6 hours without waking for a feed 🙈🙈😓 maybe he was too comfy?!

Yay! No such thing as too comfy! A baby will wake if they're hungry or uncomfortable.

RWK29 · 25/11/2020 07:15

@JellyMouldJnr Thanks 😅 woke up feeling serious guilt as if I’d starved my child 🙈

@RWK29 sounds like you nailed it to me! I remember the first time my daughter did that and I felt terrible too as if I'd not heard her wake up!

He's slept through because he didn't need the feed so excellent! Hope you feel refreshed from the sleep you got. I expect he'll be feeding a lot today! Grin

RWK29 · 25/11/2020 09:02

@Queenofthemadouse it’s just a constant worry isn’t it 🙈😂 he’s a very content boy this morning! Nice big long feed rather than the constant short feeds that’s he’s been doing the last few days (I think he was on a bit of a growth spurt) so hopefully he’s getting more settled 😊
