6 year old having very bad nightmares - any calming bedtime story books?

My ds2 has been waking up every night for the past 3 nights at around 2am and walking into our room complaining of nightmares - "noises and flashing lights". I take him back to bed and as soon as his head hits the pillow the terrors come again. It takes ages to settle him. A friend mentioned that there are great bedtime story books that help restful sleep. Have got 'The Sandman' but has anyone else had experiences like this and found anything that helps?

Sweet Dreams. Don't know who wrote it, but there are pictures and flaps and it's all about dreaming and dealing with night time fears.

You might try Nightlights by David Fontana, which is designed to be a sort of precursor to meditation and has stories which may help specific situations.

Other than that... does he have any comforting old favourites from when he was younger?

we haven't got many suggestions in relevant books, but what works for my two DS (age 7 & 4) is massage - face...they love eyebrow strokes, feet, back, hands, any of these. And a dusting of 'magic sleepy dust' which i sprinkle from their feet upwards, which makes them feel warm and relaxed aka 'heavy'. And being magic, of course you can't see it.
They all go thru this don't they, imaginations go totally OTT and those blardy fireworks aren't helping at the mo.
In last year's firework season (prolonged as usual) we left cd playing softly in the boys' room - tho this may not be any use to you at 2am?

wishing u a night of peaceful sleep.
