Its for dh. He's always had problems, and now he's on AD it seems to be worse and he is only getting a couple of hours in 24, not good especially as he looks after dd when I am at work.

He tries the usual, relaxing, hot bath etc before bed, herbal sleep pills. He just can't switch off and if he eventually does drop off the slightest thing wakes him and he is back to square one. The only thing that guarantees him any sleep is a few drinks, but he certainly doesn't want to be doing that every night!

He wondered about acupunture as our gp can do this, it can't hurt (fnar!) to give it a go, but I was just interested in others people views/ experiences with this sleep problem...

Haven't tried it for insomnia but have tried it for hayfever and PMS and it was great. So it has to be worth a go. And it doesn't hurt!

I found that giving up caffeine was helpful, not just abstaining after 6 or whatever. Absolutely none at all. You do go through a slight withdrawal.

I also used to take the non herbal over the counter pills if I had got into a no sleep cycle, as I found that the less sleep I got the less sleep I would get ifswim. Just once a week or so would often help.

I am a big fan of acupuncture but have never used it in relation to sleep problems.

dont know if it would help, but I find that I struggle to stay awake after a good massage.

massivebigpumpkinface · 15/10/2007 19:32

tell that to dh please!
I have always suggested massage but dh runs on nervous energy, he is very active and finds it hard to settle down to something like massage or meditation.
Me on the other hand...

I have had sporadic bouts of insomnia for years and have tried baths, no caffeine, massage, lavender pillows/oil, early nights, late nights. None work for me. My current phase of insomnia has lasted about 5 weeks so far. I look like shit!

So let me know how the acupuncture goes.

GreatHauntieWurly · 15/10/2007 19:39

mbpf, I have been doing a massage course, and at the beginning of each we do 30 minutes of relaxation. The first couple of weeks I found it really hard to turn off and relax, but I found a couple of relaxation techniques on youtube which I try to do when I am here by myself which I have found really helps me not only to realx but to also have a little nap when doing so (not an insomniac but I am awake if i'm distrubed whilst asleep).

PLease tell his to go have a professional massage, if it doesnt help him sleep then it will definatly help him to relax.

Hypnotherapy. Then temazepam.

Both worked quite well, the drugs very well.

Not addicted. Now consider myself cured, after a very long time of insomniac hell.
