Woken up by milk float every night

at about 3.50 and I can't get back to sleep. When we first moved into this house in May and were immediately canvassed by Dairy Crest (the milk float people) and we chose to have a delivery 5 days a week - milk, water, stuff I was always running out of or sick of trying to cram in the freezer. We tried it for a week but had a dog then and the deliveries made him bark waking everyone up, so I cancelled. Then the dog continued to bark whenever he heard the float passing. I think he finally stopped after a few weeks, anyway, sadly I had to rehome him shortly afterwards so that's no longer an issue. However the float continues to wake me up nearly every week night now (it wakes dh up too, but not as often) - it's not like it just drives past, it stops and starts about 2 or 3 times seemingly right outside our house. The bottles don't rattle or anything, it's just the noise of the float itself.

I'm going to call them tomorrow as I think I've tried long enough now to become used to it. I'm exhausted everyday but I'm really worried if they don't give a f*k and there's nothing I can do - I don't know the neighbours that have the deliveries but I'd have to speak to them - what if they don't give a f*k and it just seems like a huge can of worms.

I was just wondering if anyone else had had dealt with this problem and if there's a right way to approach it. Obviously don't want to rant at them (though I feel like it), but need to be taken seriously.

Sorry for the ramble - I'm knackered

There's no reasonable way you can expect your neighbours to stop having deliveries because you are waking up! NO WAY should you mention it to them. It is really a problem of your's not theirs, so why not get some ear plugs or white noise to help you sleep better.

This thread is really reminiscent of the earlier '2 year old next door waking me at 5am' thread...

sorry if I sounded crass, sleep deprivation is torture I know (6 month old baby).

Ear plugs are a good idea. You can easily buy them in Boots and they are effective.

Perhaps you have just become oversensitive to the noise, because you are so worried/despairing about your insomnia -- and becasue of the earlier problem with the dog.

The oversensitivity will disappear with time, esp if the earplugs help you to get into a better sleep routine.

I used to use earplugs all the time - for about 18 months but they gave me an ear infection.

I don't see how it compares at all with the 2 year old keeping me awake thread, it's a totally different situation.

try using new ones each night, i know it's an expense but they do work. i've used mine for a couple of years but rarely change them!

i meant it was like the other thread in the way that you want your neighbours to change their habits to help with your sleep.

Crikey - there used to be earplugs all over the place - I'd find them in the most remote places. They never really worked for me though, always seemed so big and believe me I tried every one on the market - plastic, wax, all the various foam and latex ones - I'd buy bumper selection bags from Ebay but eventually found that the best way of blocking noise was to make my own from cotton wool with a bit of olive oil. It was tricky weaning myself off, but I managed it and really don't want to go back to having to do it. The road we're on it completely quiet apart from the float.

I've just tried to call Dairy Crest but no one's in the office yet. I realise I'm in a very weak position and therefore entirely at the mercy of them, I know can't reasonably expect my neighbours to stop their deliveries (but don't feel reasonalbe at 6am after being awake for 2 hours), but I do hope the driver can stop stopping and starting outside my house - I'd be able to sleep though one stop I'm sure, but not 2 or 3 times.
