Is it safe for baby to nap on playmat on floor?

FTM looking for advice (basically terrified of doing the wrong thing or breaking the rules!)
My baby is nearly four months old and although fits in his basket that we have in the living room it is getting a bit of a squeeze. If we are at home and he falls asleep on me he will now either wake up as soon as I transfer him (he wont fall asleep if put down awake in basket even though he does this at night in his next2me crib) or not last very long and I was wondering if it may be that it's getting too small and no longer comfortable for him (he used to transfer no problem)

So I've got in a bit of a habit of planning home nap times around a bit of chill time for me where I just let him sleep on me and not bother transferring to the basket. Yesterday though I was desperate to go to the toilet so laid him on the playmat on the floor. Miraculously he didn't wake up and stayed asleep for a good while longer!

The playmat is waterproof and firm and about the thickness of a travel cot mattress. Laid on the floor with no toys around. Is this safe for a regular arrangement? Or any other suggestions for daytime naps at home? We are very limited on space.

My DD used to sleep on her playmat when she was little. Pretty thin, on a hard surface (the floor) and was supervised (apart from me nipping the toilet or to make a drink/food) so guessed it was fine. I never saw any official advice in the leaflets about that situation but happy to corrected.

I did the same thing op when my lo was small, just make sure your supervising.

As long as it’s a firm, flat surface that they can’t fall off of, you’ll be fine.
My dd would sleep in her pram in the living room until she was old enough (and I was comfortable with) to nap in her cot in her bedroom.

Thanks for the reassurance! 😊
