Curious as to when your little ones moved down to only one nap and how you could tell they were ready for this? Thanks.

Hi, my dd's nearly 10 months and still on 2 naps-- not too helpful an answer to your question though!

I just wanted to recommend 'Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child by Marc Weissbluth. It's basically a sleep-training book, which I didn't follow, but is very informative on the various stages of development, sleep-wise. I've found it really useful for identifying the changes in her sleeping patterns.

about 15 months I think. he just staretd having a problme sleeping in the morning. tranistioning was a bit hit and miss, some days 1 nap some days two. I found giving him very early lunch 11.30 and down to sleep at 12-12.30 worked in the end.

iwouldgoouttonight · 09/10/2007 13:09

My DS is 14 months now and has been only having one nap for a couple of months. I'm not sure he's the best example as he has never slept much in the day so he went from two half-hour naps to one which can last between 0.5 and 1.5 hours. He just gradually seemed less tired in the morning so napped nearer to lunchtime and then didn't seem to want one in the afternoon. He does have days at nursery when he doesn't nap at all and he is VERY CROSS in the evening!

draculasmummy · 09/10/2007 13:10

Around 13 months. She goes too sleep on the way back from school and slleps until 11.30/12ish. Does until about 7 then. Others were around the same age i think.

jelliebelly · 09/10/2007 13:11

Ds moved to one sleep after lunch from about 12 months old although if we were out in the mornings he would often have a catnap in the car.

cupcakes · 09/10/2007 13:11

my dd2 is almost 10 months and has very recently started having one nap.

She won't sleep in the afternoon. Occasionally she might nod off in the pram on the school run but for 20 mins max and hardly ever.

She goes to bed between 7 and 7.30pm and wakes up at least once (often 2-3 times) a night.

Did I say ?

ceebeegeebies · 09/10/2007 13:13

DS was about 12 months (ish) and even then, he would still have 2 naps somedays.

Probably consistently from 13 months - however, his nap routine does vary depending on whether he is at home (in which case he has his one nap between 9-11 in the morning) and when he is at nursery (when his one nap is usually 1.30-2.30 in the afternoon).

Don't ask me why it is different - I have no idea!! But there is no way he would last until 1.30 at home - guess more going on at nursery.

If he does just have the one nap, he is very easy to put to bed at 7pm.

Occasionally he does still have 2 naps but this is only if we go somewhere in the car mid-afternoon.

DD is almost 17 months and her sleep varies from extreme to extreme during the day.

Yesterday morning she slept for about 40 minutes and I then had to wake her to go out. Then in the afternoon she slept for another 3.5hours.

Other days, she'll only need one hour in total.

I think she is gradually starting to move more to only one nap a day, but is now down for her second nap - the morning one having lasted two hours.

LilBloodRedWantsGore · 09/10/2007 13:16

Forgot to say, she goes to bed at 7pm and wakes anywhere between 6.30am and 8am.

callmeovercautious · 09/10/2007 13:17

At about 11m DD went from 2 45 min naps to one slightly later in the Morning. She has now extended the time she sleeps to at least an hour - occasionally 2 hours (hence I am on MN!!!) If she only has a short nap she is horrible from about 5pm so I bring tea forward and put her down a little early. I I let her nap in the afternoon she stays up until 10pm!

She is 13m now

callmeovercautious · 09/10/2007 13:18

lilblood at all that daytime napping!

aDad · 09/10/2007 13:20

dd2 - 12months next week has either 1 or 2. Think ideally it should be 1 soon just so we can put her to bed a bit earlier in the eve.

Also 2 naps makes doing anything else with your day pretty tricky as you have to be in mid-morning and mid-afternoon - awkward if you have other children especially.

aDad · 09/10/2007 13:21

think dd1 dropped naps altogether by 18 months

LilBloodRedWantsGore · 09/10/2007 13:36

Sorry callme . If it is any consolation it is a major shock to me on the days she only has an hour!

QueenofBleach · 09/10/2007 13:42

About 18 months and then dropped from 2 2hour naps to one 2-3 hour.

Mercedes · 09/10/2007 13:50

from memory by about 8 months my dd had 1 nap of about 2.5 hours from 1 till 3.30ish. She then went down to sleep about 7.30ish and then woke at 7am.
My dd rarely had two naps even at 5 months unless I went out and walked her in the pram - she did sleep all night which was fantastic.

magnolia74 · 09/10/2007 13:56

Ds1 is 10 months and has just started having a nap 12pm-2pm instead of 9.30am-11am and 2pm-3pm

MaeWhooooohest · 09/10/2007 13:57

DS is now 14 months and pretty consistently having only one nap. We're still pretty much in the transitional phase so I do the early lunch thing if we're at home and try to get him down around 12/12.30. When he's at the cm anything goes and he seems to be able to survive on a 10 minute cat nap in the car some days .

He was definitely still having 2 naps at 12 months as I remember him being put to bed halfway through his birthday party as he was knackered. He has always been and continues to be a fairly rubbish night-time sleeper tho, and daytime naps don't seem to make that much difference either way.

Oh and the way I could tell that he didn't need the morning nap anymore was because I put him in the cot at the usual time and he just didn't go to sleep.

MaeWhooooohest · 09/10/2007 13:58

magnolia - we used to have similar nap times... I miss that big morning nap

louloubelle · 09/10/2007 14:02

Both dd (3 1/2) and ds (18mo) dropped morning nap (about 1 1/2hr after wakeup) at exactly a year, They have 2 hr at lunch time, about 1.15-3.15
Reason I could tell...dd can't remember, ds would still sleep at morning and afternoon nap, but screamed in cot at night for about an hour, consistently til I dropped am nap.

Canadiandream · 09/10/2007 14:05

Around a year. DS goes to nursery and the staff in the baby room told me that a year was the usual age.

Ref when you know when they're ready, for ds it was that he started to sleep longer in one stretch. Prior to that he had only catnapped for 30 mins at a time.

foxymagoo · 09/10/2007 14:06

Last Friday! ds is 16 months and was having one 30 minute morning nap and 1.5 hour after lunch nap.

It was getting harder and harder to put him down after lunch and his morning nap was getting later and later (used to be 2 hours after he work, then 3 then 4!)

You do have to re-think your routine (I used to have my shower when ds was having his mn) but he is now happy to play while I get washed so it balances out.

Also means you have more of the afternoon together. ds now wakes at 2pm rather than 3.30pm when he was having a morning nap.

Only wish he would sleep later than 6am..

OverRated · 09/10/2007 14:12

About 10 months. He didn't really nap before then. By 22 months he stopped napping completely

crokky · 09/10/2007 14:19

OverRated I share your pain! My 19 month old has stopped napping completely this week.

mumsville · 09/10/2007 20:14

One nap at 13 months following an early lunch.

I knew when he started waking at 5.30. I posted on mn and everyone screamed cut a nap. Worked immediately.
