ds ten mths now i know i know i should havedone it earlier, but i was petrefied something would happen to him if he wasn't with me,but now dh ( i use this term loosely) has a cough and keeps waking ds as it is he wakes up to 4 times a night, and i cant take any more i think he would be better in his own room,he is also teething quite badly these past few weeks. Please give me some tips of what to do to settle him in his own room
thanks (very tired mummy emoticon)

Be prepared for a few tears but be strong - it's got to be done at some point. You could always try sitting in the room until he falls asleep and edging towards the door but this may just create another problem to be dealt with. May tske a few nights for transition to run smoothly but persevere. Good luck

Be very matter of fact about it, as if this is no big deal. If you are worried about the move, your DS make pick up on this and be more unsettled.

debbsyandsonn · 08/10/2007 17:28

well thats the thing you see he does not go in his cot till he is nearly asleep and if he does wake crying dh (loosely) shouts at me to pick him up i dont want my son to suffer but i also dont want him to be around us shouting either.

Sorry, my 2 eldest are driving me up the wall. I will try and come back later with some helpful advice.

IntergalacticWalrus · 08/10/2007 17:44

I agree with NAB tbh. You need to be quite relaxed about it, as he will pick up on the tension. I never did controlled crying with either opf mine, but I often left them for a couple of mins to settle down, as I found they were often crytiung through tiredness.

It's definitely worth perservering with. DP and I had an awful time with DS1, who cried and cried every night until he wasd 11 months old. We used to argfue all the time, but when DS went intp his own room, we weren't waking him up all of the time by coughing/moving about/breathing. His snuffles would also keep[ us awak, so it worked both ways.

I know it's really hard to do, but I think the longer you leave it, the more difficult it becomes. I also found it helped me a
bit
to reclaim a bit of the house that was mine that I didn't have to share with the children.

You souns shattered. Is there anyone other then your DH who can help a bit?

Mummy2TandF · 08/10/2007 17:44

HIya Debbsy - I would try just the normal bedtime routine that you have with ds, maybe give him his bedtime feed in his new bedroom )with lights off etc) and then just bite the bullet, You never know it may just work. Otherwise sitting in the room facing away from him could help and then as the week goes on move closer to the door until you are out of the room altogether? HTH

IntergalacticWalrus · 08/10/2007 17:46

Agree witrh the bedtime routine thing as well.

I am a bit of a hippy when it comes to routines and things, but bedtime routine is something I never shift on. It's alweays Bath, milk and story, cuddles/chat etc and then bed. Have some winding down time as well, where he plays quitely or you read him a story in his own room with dimmed lighgts ertc. That helped both of mine

First night very very hard, I know. Just do what you need to to get through tonight. It is so lovely to go in in the morning to a smiley face. You're not far away at all, and will be there in a flash if he needs you.
