cot/co-sleeping Can I get my dd to sleep through??

Hi, my dd is 6 months old. She sleeps in our room (will not be able to have own room until we move in a few months times) She goes to sleep in her cot, but will quite often wake up half an hour later and then an hour after that.

i always bf her back to sleep. She then usually wakes between 10 and 11 and comes into bed with me. She then seems to feed every hour, sometimes every half hour.

She gets panicky, when I get her off the breast, to go back on, several times before she goes back to sleep ( started this when I went back to work 3 days a week, 5 weeks ago)

I keep getting people telling me about babys sleeping through from 5 weeks etc. She is my second and my first was not great at sleeping either and I planned to do much better with this one but have failed big time! Any help/advice would be great. thanks!!

I think that it's very unusual for a baby to sleep through at 6 months. I know that some do and I know that even more people say their dcs do, but I think it's often selective memory! All I can say is that they do grow out of it, and for me, it was far more restful to go with the flow rather than trying to impose a routine on a baby that wasn't ready to cooperate. If you're happy to co sleep, then do it and she'll sleep through when she's ready. Sorry if this isn't what you want to hear!

Hi. My DD is 6 months too (almost 7). She doesn't actually go to bed until I do. Sometimes she sleeps at 8pm for an hour or so but I don't put her to bed because she wakes up and screams.

At 10pm she starts whining and pulling her ears because she wants (us) to go to bed. She will then feed for up to an hour until I get fed up and tell her to go to sleep. She then wakes several times in the night to feed.

You are not alone

My DD is 16 weeks now and we co-slept some nights most nights for the first 8 or so weeks....(she was mixed fed for first 6 weeks now just formula) FF babies sleep better than bf babies....

She slept through the night (technically I am told 5hrs is sleeping through ) at 10 weeks however she had colic and after reading on here I got the Dr Harvey Karps book about happiest baby on the block and swaddled her and was then able to get her back in her moses basket (at first we could only put her down asleep). Also one of my HV was very much co-sleep do what you have to do, don't sweat it... I really think that is the key every baby is different and every child is different I think that everyone stresses about it personally I think go with the flow is best (works for us) incidently our dd did start sleeping through at 10weeks but since 2nd jabs it varies she has no pattern at all now, so if she wakes and just needs a cuddle thats what she gets if she needs a feed thats what she gets.. we go with the flow I am so anal about structure and organisation in every other part of our lives (to the point I drive DH mad ) I also think you can't spoil a small child/baby.

on the discussion of co sleeping with your child i think this topic can cause quite a stir especially as all depends on the type of parenting you choose.Often parents who sleep with their babies are contrude as spoiling their child because the baby gets to attached.i think that this is partially true but i am not sure if there has been any tests to prove this theory only word of mouth and what we hear. i wonder if a test was carried out would we believe the results? would this actually change our way of thinking towards this subject.

Thanks for replies. It's good to know I am not the only one going with the flow! I am thinking about trying to introduce formula at bedtime feed - any tips??? as it is only me who can get her back to sleep with bf, so can't go out at all, and I'd like my dh to be able to get her back to sleep (and so would he!)
Thanks again! hmummy
