Cot bumper for older babies

Ok, so I know you shouldn't use a cot bumper due to risk of suffocating with small babies who can't move their head but are they ok to use with a 9 month old? My baby girl is a proper wriggler at night and the thing that keeps waking her up is her bumping into the sides of her cot. I'm desperate for a good nights sleep and am sure she needs it too. Obviously not wanting to put her at any risk though ....

No. Because they could become detached and smother the baby.

Once your baby is mobile they’re even more risky as babies can get tangled in them

seayork2020 · 07/09/2020 12:14

No no and no

MrsW85 · 07/09/2020 12:17

No! Nope! Never! Google justice for Preston. He was 9 months. Just don't do it.

TeddyIsaHe · 07/09/2020 12:19

God no! As babies become mobile they are into everything, all it takes ina split second accident, and they’re strangled or suffocated.

NOTHING in a cot except baby and a blanket. Don’t risk it.

Get a soft-sided travel cot - this is what I did for Dd when she thought bashing her head on the bars was great fun.

They’re not too expensive and do come in handy when travelling. Solves all problems.

Shelby30 · 07/09/2020 12:20

Yeah have a look on google, just NO No NO. Read a story recently about older toddler almost 2 and got strangled as he managed to untie or get then lose in the night 😢 heartbreaking.

A bumped head etc is better than a dead child.

SofaSurfette · 07/09/2020 12:26

Agree with everything PP have said. I can't believe they are still allowed to be sold. My mum bought us one and I politely asked her to return it because of the dangers - she thought I was being OTT because "if they're in the shops they must be safe" Sad
The travel cot is a great idea.

LaTomatina · 07/09/2020 12:40

Just came on to reiterate travel cot. Brilliant things. Much cheaper than a real cot but take up less space and no hard bars to crash into or pull up on. With a proper mattress it's just as good as any other cot. Plus you can easily fold it up if you want to move/store/pass it on.

Thank you all for your replies. A great big no it is then. Will start looking into travel cots.

Why are they still allowed to be sold then?

@wrigglewriggles

Why are they still allowed to be sold then?
Because different countries have different safety standards and people haven't kicked off a big campaign to get them banned.

What are people's views on the cot bar bumpers like these? Are these ok as they're only small pieces of material if they were to get pulled off the bars?

To give you some hope my LO was a roller and cot head butter-
no harm done.

notso · 07/09/2020 19:13

Why not put her in a toddler bed?

TeddyIsaHe · 07/09/2020 19:59

9 month old in a toddler bed? She’s fall out every 5 minutes Grin

FlowerTink · 07/09/2020 20:06

A clear cot is best. Nothing but the baby and a sleeping bag.

Echoing what pp said about facebook searching Justice For Preston, his mum regularly posts about their story and also shares a lot of helpful information.

TerribleCustomerCervix · 07/09/2020 20:10

I’ve seen Preston’s mum on a few of these threads- she’s lovely and passionate about other parents knowing the risks of bumpers

Oh and don't co-sleep with a wiggler unless you want to learn how a very small person can take up the entire bed.

Abouttimemum · 07/09/2020 21:48

DS slept in his travel cot between the ages of 9 months and a year because of head banging and stuck limbs etc. I just bought a proper mattress for it.
