2 to 1 naps? advice please!

my 12mth old baby has started really fighting his afternoon nap, sometimes giving in and sleeping for an hour, but often not til 3 (it used to be from 1.30 to 3.
his very rough schedule looked like this:
up at 6ish
nap 9 to 10ish
nap 1.30 to 3ish
bed 7ish.

and he had started, hurrah!, mostly sleeping through. so last week or so, along with not easily going for afternoon nap, he is difficult to put to bed (30 mins fighting) he has been waking in the night 3 or 4 times. or, like this morning, sleeping through til 5 then getting up. ugh.
so, is he dropping a nap? if so, what should i do?
i really want to keep the 10 - 12 slot free cos we go to baby groups then and he really enjoys them (as do i!)
have wondered if its a milestone development thing, he's mastered walking, has 20 odd words now, but he does seem to have just started some basic bowel control (making himself poo). don't want to mess too much with the naps if it's not that! but want his nightsleep back to something good!
do i:
a) leave it alone and see where it goes
b) reduce his morning nap time
c) reduce his afternoon nap time
d) any ideas?

please help!

When dd went from 2 naps to 1, it happened gradually. She started having her morning nap later and later and then not needing one in the afternoon. I know that doesn't really help you because you want to keep the 10-12 slot free though! Why don't you try stretching him out until you go to a group and then see how long he lasts? He might suprise you and be OK until 11ish and then not need another nap in the day.

Night wakings at 12 months are quite common I think, can't really help there because dd has never been a great night sleeper but she got awful around this time and then settled down again after her molars came through.

My dd has only had one nap in the cot from about 10 months I think.
She sometimes fal asleep in the pushchair if we're out but mostly she just sleeps after lunch from about 12 - 2pm.
This means she happily goes to bed at 6.30pm (most of the time)

he's currently asleep, and he's just totally shattered by 9 and really ready for his morning nap. maybe i'm being a bit hasty! x

I wouldn't drop the nap but maybe move it to 9.30 and shorten it. My DB used to do exactly the same thing and he sounds similar to yours in terms of walking and talking although he stopped his morning nap at 10 months! DB is notorious for cutting his night time sleep before dropping naps.

okay, i did shorten it to 45 mins, and then he was tired enough to go down at 2. he slept for 1hr 15 which is an above average sleep for him!
so, am hoping tonight will be easier.
