Hi, my little boy has decided he wants to climb out of his cot at night. I'm worried he is going to hurt himself.
He is 2 1/2 and I think that too young to put him in a bed, what does everyone else think??

thats about the right age for a bed tbh. Dd was in a bed at 2 and ds at 2 ½ years. Its not safe to keep the cot side up if they are climbing out

donutpretzel · 31/07/2020 08:48

Mine were both in toddler beds by about 18 months. At first it was very exciting for them and they were up and out of bed a lot playing and then flaked on the floor, but they soon realised it was better to sleep in the bed

My eldest was 2 and youngest 16 months - both because they started climbing out of the cot.
They were ok a very low bed though as they used to fall our - but we also got a bed 'side' that helped keep them in

Toddler bed, 16months. He slept better instantly

My second son loved his cot, but by the age of 2 he could climb out of it, we put a bed next to the cot so he would fall onto the bed. He started climbing out every night, so we then let me sleep in the bed.

2 and a half. We put a pillow next to her in the floor. She’s rolled off a couple of times and stayed asleep. Pretty low cotbed though.

MinesAPintOfTea · 31/07/2020 09:28

Side off the cot the day he first climbed out as once they can do that there's a risk of them falling badly in the night.

Bed about 2 weeks later because we couldn't find a low side rail for the cot and he kept falling out and waking up.

Babdoc · 31/07/2020 09:31

15 months, because I was 8 months pregnant with her little sister, who would need the cot!
We just put the bed mattress on the floor, without a base, so she couldn’t fall out. She was thrilled with her “big girl’s bed”. We showed it to her in the afternoon, with all her teddies in it, and she wanted to get in and play, and was reluctant to come downstairs again!

If he's climbing out of the cot then it's time for him to go in a bed. Both my DC were somewhere between 2.5 - 3yrs.

About 18 months, into one of these with side guards to minimise rolling out.

Most 2.5 year olds are in beds with a bedguard ime

welshweasel · 31/07/2020 10:10

I took the side off the cot at 2.5, and dropped the nap at the same time so he was so tired by bedtime he never got out of bed. Went into a single bed just before he turned 3 as needed cot for new baby.

borisjohnsonsstylist · 31/07/2020 10:38

I took the sides off the cot at 2 because DS had fallen out of the cot. I roll up a spare toddler duvet and put it under the cot sheet to stop him falling out.

DontYouKnowPumpItUp · 31/07/2020 10:47

DS was in on a full size single bed at 16 months. I didn't put a guard on, he rolled out for first few nights but that's it. Doesn't really get out of bed at all and goes to sleep fine :)

MostlyAmbridgeandcoffee · 31/07/2020 10:49

Think the general consensus will be when they start climbing out of the cot they are ready...

Spam88 · 31/07/2020 11:00

Yep, into a bed now, and side off the cot until you get a bed. It's not safe to put him in a cot any more.

I would think the general consensus is you stop using a cot when they start trying to climb out (or you need the cot for a subsequent child - whichever comes first!).

Thankyou for all the replies. Did they transition well??

Absolutely fine. I've cleared the room of toys so all that's in there is furniture, clothes and bed.

From a safety perspective just make sure everything that can be attached to a wall is, they'll be mobile and alone and likely to try and climb stuff.

MarshaBradyo · 31/07/2020 14:11

Yes dd was getting frustrated in the cot and wanted the side removed
