Swaddle at 5.5 months..when rolling

I swaddled my daughter from birth to around 4 months when she started rolling. We stopped swaddling cold turkey during the 4 month sleep regression because I thought, well it can’t get any worse so may as well do it now! The thing is the 4 month sleep regression never ended, she has been waking hourly for the last 8 weeks, every night!!

We’ve tried everything..co-sleeping, self settling in own bed, dummy, white noise etc and there hasn’t even been a hint of improvement. Last night, just to see what would happen, I swaddled just her arms again. She slept 5 hours! I de-swaddled when I was going to sleep because I know you’re not meant to when they can roll..she she woke up hourly.

Did anyone continue swaddling after their baby could roll or is this just way too risky? She sleeps in a sleepyhead and is fairly wedged in so I don’t think she could actually roll like this, she has also never ever rolled onto her front in bed. She’s been a good 6 weeks without the swaddle and it never got better..I think she’s too active and wakes herself up flailing arms when transitioning sleep cycles so wondering if she just needs a bit more time till shes less jerky with her movements?

You can swaddle with 1 arm out which means she can push herself onto her back.

Try at a naptime so you can keep an eye

If she can roll, have you tried removing the sleepyhead? She may roll onto her front and that also stops flailing. My 8mo is a front sleeper - he started doing it at 4mo when he could roll and he sleeps much better than my 3yo ever did and I'm pretty sure it's because sleeping that way stops him fidgeting and thrashing about.

If she can roll I would take her out of the sleepy head as well. You have my absolute sympathy though. We just about got through the '4 month' regression (lasted till... Er...6 months??) then we got hit with the 9 month leap/teething/separation anxiety /regression. Brutal. Hope it gets better soon

Yeah we did try removing the sleepyhead and also putting her in her big cot but moving this into our room (she’s currently in a side car cot with a sleepyhead inside it). It didn’t seem to help but I might try this again as it sound like it would be a much better position for her..even though she can roll she doesn’t actually do it very much so wonder if she needs to get a bit more mobile before she realises she can change positions. She just tends to flap her arms about / knock dummy out / claw face when they’re free!
