9 month old is a terrible sleeper!

Hi mummys! My 9 month old has never been a great sleeper and has never slept through the night. His always fought his sleep too! He goes to sleep about 7, has a good 2-3 hours sleep then He moves around and stirs all night until he gets up at 5am. He just doesn't stop moving! He sometimes even sits up (still has eyes closed) then lays back down over and over again. He whinges and cries out too. He does this whether he is in his cot or if iv brought him into our bed cos i’m just too exhausted! He sometimes goes back to sleep himself or i have to cuddle him for comfort. Majority of the time he still looks asleep but sometimes opens his eyes. Does anyone have any ideas why or anything that could help? Im getting pretty desperate now! We have a bedtime routine of bath, bottle and bed. Thank you x

Could he be uncomfortable with teething?

BabySleepTeacherUK · 11/07/2020 15:13

How do you get baby to go to sleep at bedtime?

What is way daytime sleep like? How/where does he go to sleep and for how long?

He has been teething yes and recently got 2 bottom teeth but its been going on for ages now! I have tried the teething gels, nurofen and calpol to help. Can they struggle with teething for a long period of time? x

The top two teeth start coming through not long after the bottom two. My dd is 8 months and her tops are emerging so we have awful nights. She thrashes around, hits her face in her sleep etc.

Usually a little massage and then cuddles and i sing to him. I have tried the crying out method but he ends up in such a state that he seems more awake!! Once iv got him asleep in the day, i put him in his cot and he sleeps anything from half hour to and An hour and a half! He has 2 naps a day, one longer one and then a shorter one x

Is he in his own room? Are you maybe waking him up?

Are you getting him to sleep in your arms, being cuddled, and putting him down already asleep (or very nearly asleep)?

Or do you mean that you give a massage then a cuddle and put him in the cot fully awake, to go to sleep in the cot?

It makes a big difference to how well he will settle in the night.

Oh really i didnt know that! Maybe it could be that then. He does hit his mouth n his sleep sometimes actually. Hope it eases soon for you and baby!

Yes, it's best to put him down awake and this is likely to be the primary cause of being unsettled in the night. Its really important for good sleep hygiene to go to sleep where you stay asleep, rather than being transferred into the cot already asleep.

As to how you go about achieving that, that comes down to sleep training technique but the aim of any technique is the same, to teach baby to go to sleep in the cot.

There are loads of different ways to teach baby, depending on your partenting style and how gentle you want to be.
