11 week old rolling onto side in sleep

My 11 week old immediately rolls onto her side as soon as I put her down to sleep. We have a next to me crib and she is currently in a love to dream swaddle (arms in the air one) but is this still safe? She’s terrifying me! I woke up last night to find she’d somehow got diagonal across the crib!

I wouldn’t swaddle her anymore, we used a baby sleep bag after the rolling point so that she can still move her legs about in there to right herself if need be. As for the rest, yes it’s fine as long as they are being put into their back,if they go on their side it’s their own free movement. My health visitor confirmed that. As for the diagonal thing, do just watch out they don’t get wedged... won’t do them any harm but the waking up moaning might bug you!

Please do not put a sheet over a sleep bag....

Christ sake @BabySleepTeacherUK
What is it with you giving VERY DANGEROUS advice.

There is NO WAY you are what your user name suggests!!!!

Cauliflower82 · 13/07/2020 06:28

A sleeping bag really is all you need. I wouldn’t use a blanket now baby is rolling and moving around in their crib.

@BabySleepTeacherUK this is the 2nd thread I've seen you on giving incorrect advice. What qualifies you to be a "baby sleep teacher" anyway?

@BabySleepTeacherUK
This user is giving very dangerous advice and should be removed

@DontWantToAdult

Regarding Bouncers - nothing to be alarmed about, they are not considered unsafe by the Lullaby Trust (which is the advisory body on SIDS for the NHS and UK government).

Lullaby Trust are fairly ambiguous about this aspect of safe sleep than they are other aspects, for reasons I'm happy to explain in more depth for anyone interested, because it's not black and white and considering this aspect of safe sleep requires some view of managing risk (as opposed to eliminating risk).

There's a list of items consideredunsafeand would not recommend parents buy (see attached image). Note that bouncersare noton this.

There is also the very clear advice from Lullaby Trust that "The safest place for a baby to sleep is a separate cot, crib or Moses basket. We recommend a firm, flat, waterproof mattress."

There are a lot of sleep instances that are in the middle here that Lullaby Trust accept are not the "safest" answer, but are equally not considered "unsafe" and thereforeare options to parents, in a risk managed way.

The are many very examples to this but here are a few:
● Cosleeping
● Sling
● Pushchair
● Carseats (for under 2h)
● Holding in arms (when not tired)
● Asleep on a carpeted floor (the joy of babies who do this... just fall asleep while playing!)
●BOUNCY CHAIR(caps deliberate)

It comes down to understanding that safe sleep is not a matter of eliminating risk to zero. It is about managing risk in a way that makes it as low as possible. This may mean the risk management is not "safest" but it is equally not "unsafe".

I'd be pleased if you wouldn't search out old posts of mine and bump them just to be a bit nasty and rude @DontWantToAdult

I've been posting on Mumsnet sleep threads for years and years with the same advice. I'm just here to help folks, because I happen to have a good knowledge of baby and toddler sleep (and I'm a teacher, an actual one).

Please don't be nasty to me. I dont know why you went to the trouble to search for multiple older posts of mine just to try and ridicule me (over something that you have no reason to). It's not helping anyone, and my mental health right now won't cope.

Peace and Love and all that.

Please do not put a sheet over a sleep bag....

Why ever not @DontWantToAdult?

You can get:

● Many different you ratings of sleeping bag
• 0.5 tog
• 1.0 tog
• 2.5 tog
• 3.5 tog

● Many different sleepwear clothing to wear at night:
• just a nappy
• nappy + short sleeved vest
• nappy + long sleeved vest
• nappy + short sleeved vest + sleepsuit
• nappy + long sleeved vest + sleepsuit
• nappy + short sleeved vest + fleece sleepsuit
• nappy + long sleeved vest + fleece sleepsuit

All if these are so that parents can adjust their baby's layers according to the room temperature.

Absolutely no reason why you can't:
■ Go down a you rating on your sleeping bag and add a cotton sheet over the top
■ Put baby in less clothing (just a vest instead of vest plus sleepsuit, for example) and add a cotton sheet over the top of the sleeping bag.

I tightly tucked in sheet is a long establishesd (and totally safe) way to help a baby used to swaddled to wean off them.

As an aside, there's a class issue at play here. What you might not realise in your hysteria at using a sheet over the top of a sleeping bag is that there are families out there who cannot justify the cost of buying different tog rated sleeping bags for their babies, nor indeed fleece sleepsuits (which are often the same price for 1 as you can buy a pack of 7 plain white cotton sleepsuits).

Such families may well make-do by buying only a summer weight sleeping bag and over the winter months adding sheets and blankets over the top of baby in sleeping bag (Feet to Foot).

This shouldn't be a revelation.

This is totally safe.

DontWantToAdult · 14/07/2020 00:36

@BabySleepTeacherUK
Because you are not suppose to put a sheet with a sleep bag

Yes, sleep bags are different togs and you put different layers underneath.
Thank you for the copy and pasted information.
I already know this.

Sleep bags have togs so you dont have to have any extra bedding with it.
Because ITS DANGEROUS !!!

I wasn't nasty. I simply commented on two RECENT threads of yours....

Blankets are not recommended with wriggly babies

DontWantToAdult · 14/07/2020 00:38

@BabySleepTeacherUK
A child does NOT SUPPOSE TO SLEEP IN A BOUNCY CHAIR!
