Sleeping bags for baby confusion

Hi all

I am doubting myself and wondering what tog I need and what to put baby in when wearing the sleeping bag etc.

It's about 22-25c in our bedroom currently depending on the weather, and she is just in a sleepsuit and bodysuit.

Over winter we keep our room to a minimum of 18C.

Looking online it's saying to use a 1 tog and others saying to use a 2.5 tog for 18C.

What advice do others have for me please.

I only use 2.5 tog in winter. I’d use 1 or 0.5 in summer. How does baby feel when you stick your hand down the front? I never found the online charts very good.

And I also never worried about the 18 degrees thing at night. Just put an extra layer on under pjs.

I have a range of togs and dress accordingly regardless of season. She wears 2.5 tog up to 20 degrees (with a vest if 18 or below) and 1 tog from 21-24 degrees. Above that she sleeps in 0.5 tog.

It's a similar temperature in our bedroom at the moment and DS is sleeping in just a vest with a 1 tog sleeping bag. I soon know if he's too warm because he gets a sweaty neck!

It's between 23c and 20c in our room at the moment and my some is in a 1.5 tog with a long sleeve vest. If it drops until 20c he goes in a 2.5 tog. If it goes 24c he goes in a short sleeve vest. Anything from 26c upwards I take him out the sleep bag.

You just have to go with your instinct really.

Hold old?

Below 20: 2.5 tog bag
20/21: 1 tog bag, long sleeved body, trousers
22/23: 1 tog bag, long sleeved body, no trousers
24-26: 0.5 tog bag, long sleeved body, no trousers
26+: 0.5 tog bag, short sleeved body

generally advice - your baby just needs one (and no more than one) warmth "upgrade" from what you are comfortable with, to allow for the smaller body size. so if it's such a warm night that you would just be having a sheet over you but no duvet, give your baby a sheet plus one blanket, or a 2tog sleeping bag. if its cooler and you are comfortable under a 4 tog duvet, give your baby a 6 tog sleeping bag. if you need 10 togs your baby needs 12.

RedCatBlueCat · 06/07/2020 07:52

Please dont follow Yinu's numbers.
In a sleeping bag you need a MUCH lower number of togs compared to an adult in a bed with a duvet.

Otherwise, one more layer for baby that you is a good rule of thumb. It just doesn't translate well into duvets/sleeping bags.

I think there is a degree of overlap between the temperatures and togs : so you could have a 2.5 tog and short sleeved vest, or a 1 tog with vest and sleep suit, for example (check thus, it's a while since I used sleeping bags) and baby be fine in both.

It depends how old your baby is - when they're younger they need lighter togs (so 2.5 tog for 16-18 degrees, 18-21 is a 1 tog) but if they're older they're ok to be a bit warmer (e.g., my 18 month old will always be in a 2.5 tog at 22 degrees)

Thanks all. She is 6 weeks today, bless her and growing fast!!! Just putting her into 3-6 month clothing Shock

I am getting a 1 tog and 0.5 tog off a friend today so was going to put her in the 0.5 and a sleep suit and see how she goes. I just worry about her over heating.

In her sleepsuit and bodysuit last night her chest was warm but her neck felt hotter. Hair wasn't wet but when you kissed her forehead it felt a bit wet to your lips but couldn't feel it on fingers easily.
