White noise

Has anyone successfully sleep trained without white noise? I’d like to start sleep training my 5 and a half month old son and was wondering if anyone had any success stories where they haven’t had to use white noise. Thank you :-)

White noise is not necessary in order to go to sleep. Lots and lots of babies/adults prefer silence to go to sleep, so dont feel you must use white noise if it's not working for your child.

The time its useful is to stop a child being woken up by any tiny noise (like you getting into bed, open a door etc). If your child isnt woken by these things, white noise is not necessary.

Thank you so much for your reply BabySleepTeacherUk! Our daughter never used white noise, but I can’t for the life of me remember how I got her to settle. She was definitely a finger sucker. I want to start sleep training but we struggled with the white noise when DS was small and sometimes he gets annoyed when I attempt to use it now he’s a bit older. Just a bit confused as so many ‘sleep training books’ say white noise is a must. Confused

Its not a must. It just helps a lot and makes sleep easier, in the same way that a dummy helps a lot too. But lots of people choose not to use them even though they help, and some other people find they dont help anyway. Not not an absolute must, not by any stretch.
