Is my 4 year old too young to sleep in the top bunk?

DS1(aged 4) and DS2 (aged 3) share a bedroom and things are a bit crowded in there. DS1 currently sleeps in a full size bed and DS2 is in a cot bed and I'd like to put them in bunk beds to give them more space to play and store toys.

DS1 is very excited about the idea of sleeping on the top bunk but I'm terrified that he'll fall out or fall off the ladder.

What do others think? Is he too young?

Yes. Advice is not before 6.

My DD slept in a mid sleeper at 4 and she was fine. I was a bit nervous but she has always been really sensible and we had a big chat about remembering where she is if she woke up in the night needing toilet etc.
I think it would depend on your DS and whether you would trust him not to leap off it for a laugh or something

my sisters 4 year old currently sleeps in the top bunk of bunk beds and has had no problems with it. I think 6 is advised but it also depends on the child and their stage of development too.

My dds slept in a top bunk aged 4. They were sensible about it and absolutely forbidden to bounce on the top bunk.

I thought I'd heard 6 was the recommended age but wasn't sure!

However, he's not the type to leap off or climb over the side (far too cautious) and still wears a pull-up at night so never gets out of bed in the night to go to the toilet.

I need to think about this some more.
