10 month sleep/feeding help!!!

Hi all,

Would like to wean our 10 month boy as I think our night routine is not best for it.

At the moment he's on 3 solid feeds a day. He's combi fed (breastfed but formula feed for the first and last feed of the day). But since he's eating more solids he's refusing the breast.

So currently our evening/night schedule is:

-Fed solids at 530.

  • Given full 7oz formula bottle at 645-655. He takes around 5-6oz
  • Put to sleep at 730.
  • He's dropped the 10ish feed which is great.
  • He wakes up between 12-2am and if we can't resettle him. He's breastfed back to sleep.
  • This is where I think we are going wrong. He's given a 7oz bottle between 4-5, sometimes dreamfed.
  • He sleeps till 7-8.

I don't think he needs a feed between 12-2 and 4-5. So which one should I drop? And to help weaning so we give less formula?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

At 10 months old I would drop all night feeds.

You baby won't eat all the calories he needs in 24 hours during the day while ever he is getting a significant proportion of his calories at night. He's filling up at night so that come the next day, he doesnt need as much, so it self-perpetuates. A milk feed is around about 100 calories and a child under 2 needs around 1000 calories a day. So 3 night feeds equates to about a third of your childs dietary needs.

So, I'd drop all night feeds. To do that you need an alternate comforting mechanism to get baby to sleep - do you have one? It helps to also not feed at bedtime (and naptime) to completely separate feeding and sleeping.

Thank you for the reply.

We've tried the pick up put down method, he sometimes self sooth as well. Although sometimes these methods work. Most occassions when he wakes. Only a feed will get him to sleep which is why we think he may still need that night feed.

Is there any comforting methods you can suggest?

Pick up put down is better for younger babies. Shhh pat is better at this age.
