Encouraging Independent Sleep whilst room sharing

Hi all,

My 11 month old is a great napper, and for the first few months could be put down drowsy but awake in her cot and fall asleep (not that this has happened for a while). My issues is that she wakes twice a night for a feed, which is more about comfort than food. I plan to nightwean, in the hope this will reduce or stop night wakings.

My problem is that DD2 shares a room with DD1, age 3. My eldest is a different beast whdn it comes to sleep, for the last 18 months she has required mega intervention to get off at night (no naps), usually lying next to her, and stroking her. She has shown some steps towards independence, and we no longer sit on bed but on floor, and have even left a couple of times when she did go to sleep by herself.

How can I improve their sleep without each constantly waking each other in a kind of never ending circle of sleep deprived hell?!

I would keep your 11 month old in your bedroom, in a cot, until sleeping independently.

I guess I could try it. Thing is we moved her from our room as she'd wake when we went to bed, and found that she woke less in a different room. Until recently it was usually just once a night.

Ooooh, that’s tricky. Any way you can separate them until you’ve got the night wakings sorted? If you’ve got a plan and think it won’t take long, I’d even consider giving her your room if she settles well there and sleeping on a sofa bed if necessary! (Might be a bit extreme, but if it means sorting it quickly and getting more sleep.....)
