Toddlers who have stopped napping...

Your best tips...schedules from those mums whose toddlers have decided to temporarily or have decided....to end day naps ConfusedConfusedConfusedConfusedConfusedConfused

MyDD is 21 months and used to day nap for 1.5 hour a day.

Now I'm lucky if it's every other week.

Saving grace - sleeps 7.30pm to 7.30am - mostly!

Tips on how you get a break during the day?
What do you do for quiet time?
How long is quiet time?
What do you do now they aren't napping?

I'd be inclined to suggest this is a behaviour issue with toddler refusing to nap (even though it's needed), rather than toddler actually not needing a nap at this age.

I'd look at the reasons for nap being refused and tackle though to establish nap better. At this age I'd be expecting 11-12h overnight sleep plus 2-3h daytime sleep.

If you are intent on dropping the nap though, it's a good idea to establish quiet time ("Rest Hour") in place of the nap. Arrange your schedule to always be home at rest hour, never out and about. Set up a bed on the sofa - blanket and pillow. Then let toddler watch something quietly on TV for the hour with the expectation that it's not a time for getting up and playing.

Confusedshe's never done 3 hours or 2 as a nap....more 1.5hr.

She sleeps 12 hours at night.

I think that's a good amount of sleep.

Mine is 2 and doesn't have 12 hours with her day and night sleep added together!

If there's the odd day she doesn't sleep I still lie her down to rest (hoping she'll fall asleep!

My DD stopped napping a little later than this but I do remember that phase where she was starting to drop the nap.

Does she fall asleep in the car? For a while I used to plan to go out late morning and on the drive home she'd often fall asleep and I could transfer to her bed.

If that didn't work I'd let her have 'quiet time' but while I'd love to say it was an hour by herself looking at books in her room, in reality it was more like watching Peppa Pig/Cbeebies for a bit while I got on with things around the house!

You could also try bringing bedtime earlier so you get more time in the evening? Once my DD dropped the nap she was out like a light at 6.30pm each night and still slept in until around 7am.

@BabySleepTeacherUK That sounds like a load of rubbish. OP's DD is 21months.

OP, are you opposed to TV? I'd substitute nap time for something educational like alpha blocks. Or a light snack. How is she with fiddly things with buttons, etc? My DS can be kept quite for 20 mins or so with fiddly toys.

Thank goodness you said it was a lot of hours sleep!

I was like... WTF!!! 2 to 3 hour nap and sleeping 11 hours at night?!! Not a chance!

I've been doing a quiet time with books and a bit of TV. I'm not totally opposed but I always feel guilty about doing that!!!

Any other suggestions be fab. X

As we haven't been going out much - all our playgroup and play dates still on hold really - not much chance to nap in car.
