Help - Newborn SO noisy!

My 5 week old baby is so incredibly noisy at night - it just doesn't sound a) normal or b) like she can be getting any proper sleep! It's more than the grunts/snuffles I expected - we have a combination of honking/cackling/shouting. She actually slept for 6 hours tonight (9.30-3.30) but we (DH and I) only managed the odd catnap through this time because she's so loud!

Is there anything we can do?? Will it pass? I can hold out if so, but to be honest I'm eyeing up her room and wondering how bad it would be to put her in there...for now we are coping by escaping to the spare room in turns but this is partly working because DH is WFH so has no morning commute; not sure what I will do when he has to leave the house at 6.30am again.

Also, is she even properly asleep when she's making these noises?

Any ideas welcome! Thank you Smile

I don't suppose she was born by caesarean was she? She might still have mucus hanging around from the birth.

One thing you could try would be raising the cot legs at her top end so she's not completely flat.

I feel your sleep deprived pain x

Completely normal, look up Lucy Webber lactation consultant on Facebook, she did a video clip on it and explained why it happens. My daughter did this and I thought she had reflux, took her too the drs and medicated her for six weeks with no change so I stopped. I didn't know this was normal as health visitors and drs didn't know and I regret to this day giving g her medication for no reason

It could be reflux? Does she posset quite a bit?

girlrunningoncheese · 10/06/2020 07:43

@LatteLover12 she was, yes - that's a good point about the mucus. Her next to me crib tilts so i'lll try that - thank you!

@Pippinsqueak that video is reassuring and her comments make sense. My baby is much louder than that! Less grunty and more shouty, god love her...but if it's likely to pass then we can just stick it out!

@Pickles89 a bit, but not too much I don't think? Yesterday she was sick twice in the morning and then not again until once in the very early hours of this morning, so I don't think that is enough to suggest reflux but I might be wrong?

Lol my DD was like that. She is nearly 18 weeks old now and it had mostly stopped. I remember one night I went and slept in the floor in her room as I desperate for some quiet. I think it got better around 8-10 weeks. But we are going through the 4month sleep regression now 😔

I could've written this. People suggested ear plugs and I was like ha, that would not even start to block her out. It was like a farmyard. She grew out of it by 16 weeks or so.

I know this is controversial but from 6 weeks we put her in her own room (with the door open between us) as it seemed so ridiculous that she was sleeping and we weren't.

Pippinsqueak · 10/06/2020 08:47

My daughter was louder than the video too but it did pass on its own, saying though thought she's a terrible sleeper 17 months on lol

DD was like that and we put her in her own room. She grew out of it around 10-12 weeks. DS was much noisier than DD and I slept in the lounge with him in his bassinet just so DH could get some sleep. A couple of nights I cracked and tagged out with DH to catch up on a few hours. Thankfully he outgrew it around 8ish weeks and we are back in our bedroom. I did use earplugs both times and it never blocked it completely but did help a little.

Thanks everyone. It's reassuring just to know we're not alone in this! "Like a farmyard" haha yes exactly! It's ridiculous! Actually very cute - but not at 3am I did try white noise and headphones one night which drowned her out but then I felt bad in case she was actually crying for milk. You can't win!

My second was like this. Honestly it was like sleeping next to a litter of piglets. I brought it up with the gp at her 6 week check and she wasn't concerned. She's 18 weeks now and definitely getting quieter. She does always seem to have a snotty nose though so we use one of those snuffle babe aspirators before bed and it helps.
