Moving baby to own room

My Ds is 6 months old. He has allways been a rubbish napper unless held - about 30 minutes max 40. Has allways been pretty good at nighttime.
In the last week or two it’s like a switched has been flipped and he will now nap quite happily for 90 odd minutes in his next to me in our room on his own.
So I was thinking about moving him into his own room. I put him in his big cot for a nap yesterday to get him used to it and it was like we were right back at square one and he woke after half and hour but was cranky and still tired.
I think the reason is he likes to sleep with his face against the mesh of his next to me which he obviously can’t do in the wooden cot.
So my quandary is what to do now?! Do I persist with him trying to nap in the big cot until he is used to it?! Do I bite the bullet and try him in it at night and see what happens?! Do I move his next to me into the other room so he’s used to sleeping in a different room but in a familiar bed?!
Any advice or previous experience welcome. XX

If he had only just started napping well in the daytime, I would suggest you don't change anything until that change is established.

It's generally accepted that it takes 3 weeks to establish habit. So I would keep your naps as they are (in the next2me in your room) for 3 weeks to a month to make sure you fully establish those longer, independent naps.

Once established and you consistantly have naps over 90 minutes, if it was me I'd move the next2me rather than changing straight to a cot.

I'd start off with moving the next2me away from your bed but still in your room. Gradually move it further from your bed and then once she's used to sleeping without seeing you (and going from fully awake to fully asleep in the crib, not in your arms and being put down), then move it to the nursery.
