Room temperature

So I was told today by my health visitor that if the room temperature is anything over 20 degrees baby should be in just her nappy.. with no blanket or anything ? online I have seen so many different things about sleep and I'm just really not sure and it's stressing me out? We have a groegg room thermometer and because it's been so warm through the night it can be anywhere between 21 and 23 degrees, to me this still feels quite cold especially where we have the windows open to try get some air in... so how should your baby be in the basket ? As I feel like leaving her in just her nappy would be freezing!

It’s fine. The groegg only goes red at 24 degrees so that’s when I’d say you were in danger zone. So she’s not even giving you advice that tallies with the groegg box. That being said it’s 25 degrees in our room right now and the baby is wearing a vest but not the normal sleep suit or sleeping bag she would wear if the groegg were orange or yellow. 21 to 23 degrees definitely too cold for just a nappy I’d say.

I find this guide helpful.... hopefully I can post it as not very good with IT!

Ds is in a vest and a 0.5 tog sleeping bag, it’s 26 degrees in his room and the top window is open a bit. He is 12 months.

I think a baby would feel chilly in just a nappy. I suppose though that it’s better for them to feel chilly and cry to let you know, rather than for them to overheat and possibly not be alert enough to cry.

Go with the link above but every child is different, you will get some babies that feel cold quicker, and some who get warm...

Rule of thumb is a baby who is abit chilly is better than a over heated baby.

Chilly babies will wake up...

Personally I wouldnt put my baby in just a nappy at 20c. The grobag temperature guide online is good as somebody recommended above.
At 20c id still do a full babygrow

I’m shocked that your HV has advised this. I know my baby would be absolutely frozen!!

At 20 he wears a nappy, long sleeved vest and cosy bag!

Our room has been 21-23 recently so I put him in a light bag - he was too cold so I popped some trousers on too and he was fine.

I find that I wake up every couple of hours at night even though he sleeps through so I just check him and change as needed :)

I think every baby is different, really. My DD sleeps in 17 degrees in a 1.5 tog and pyjamas and is perfectly happy and warm.

With tiny babies I would always err on the side of cooler: cold babies cry, hot babies die, is the phrase they use about the SIDs risk and while I think it's a bit extreme, there's some truth in it. 23 would be hot for me and my DD so she would just have been in a nappy and sleeping bag, or just a sleepsuit and no sleeping bag, if that was the consistent temp overnight.

Lullaby Trust has guidance about temperature:

It’s better for a baby to be chilly than too hot. My 1 year old just goes to bed in a nappy if it’s over 24/25 on the gro egg. He sleeps all night.
