2 year old nap needed?

Hey everyone, I was wondering if anyone knew the affects of a 2 year old not having a nap? He spends 3 weekends a month with his father, who point blank refuses to co parent and will only do things the way he wants to. I try to keep the peace as much as I physically can. I've just found out that he's not been giving DS naps in the day time, he will nap 1-2 hours in the afternoon with me. My concern is how this will affect his development or if him going 2 days a week without a nap would be fine?

The only way it would affect my 2 year old is his attitude! He is mega grumpy when he doesn't nap so if he was staying the night at his I wouldn't be bothered as it's him who has to deal with it, if however he brought him home without him having had a nap I would be a bit annoyed

My 2y5m old doesn't nap. He hasn't since lockdown. He occasionally falls asleep on the sofa but we've stopped worrying about naps.

There is some research which suggests it’s better for children to stop napping at 2. It was definitely better for my child and overall she had more sleep when she dropped their nap.

sunlightflower · 29/05/2020 11:01

@selfsettling3 why is it better to stop napping at 2? I'm just interested. My eldest dropped her nap just before 3.

Knocksomesense · 29/05/2020 15:02

My eldest dropped at 3y5m and my youngest at 2y5m. Funnily enough both at the same time while in lockdown!

Selfsettling3 · 29/05/2020 15:08

@sunlightflower sorry I’ve read a review of the research and it says dropping nap at 2 leads to longer nighttime sleep which is obviously not the same as better.

OP many children are ready to drop their nap at 2 but some are not. Some only need a nap every few days.

“Daytime naps ‘should stop at the age of two’: Children have poorer quality sleep if they rest during the afternoon,” is the inaccurate headline on the Mail Online.

Researchers have pooled all of the available evidence on the effects of napping in childhood.

As they acknowledge, many of the studies were of a poor quality due to lack of reliable evidence.

/ENDQUOTE

The Daily Fail "research" you mention was reliably rubbished by the NHS.

@FATEdestiny for which I have already acknowledged and apologised.

I doubt it would have much of an effect on development. My mum stopped both my brother and I from napping at 18mo to make us sleep through the night and we're fine - did very well in school, good sleepers as children and teens. My 2yo sometimes naps, sometimes doesn't. I don't worry about it.

babynamesarehard · 30/05/2020 14:01

To be honest, my 3 year old hasn't napped in well over a year and has also never ever slept through the night. At least 3/4 wake ups still so I don't think dropping a nap equals more night time sleep. I think it's more about the individual child and how they cope

Seeline · 30/05/2020 14:41

Both mine absolutely refused to nap after about 18 months. They are both in there mid/late teens now and absolutely fine. Me on the other hand..... 😆

Seeline · 30/05/2020 14:42

Oh and one always slept brilliantly, and the other rarely slept through for years so don't think it has any effect there.

I have 4 kids and the older 3 were around 1y5m my daughter is 16months old and no way is she stopping her naps anytime soon I have only just got her to sleep at night to I ain't changing her naps lol. My 3year old if she has the very odd nap she won't go to bed until 10/11 at night do we keep her awake lol..
