DS had his 1 year vaccinations two weeks ago. He was fine at first and then over the last 5 days he’s developed a rash, not eating, very unsettled and grumpy, and not sleeping. The nurse said it’s all normal side effects. However he’s hardly napping and for the last 5-6 nights has been awake for a minimum of 3 hours in the night and I’m running on empty. Tonight has been on another level, he woke at 1am and I haven’t been able to get him back to sleep since and it’s now 6am. He is clearly shattered and beyond overtired but I’ve tried everything. Putting him in our bed, rocking him, he’s refused milk completely. He usual self settles on his own for both naps and night sleep but he screams and screams tonight. I’ve tried lying on the floor next to his cot. Nothing is working and I don’t know what to do. DH is getting up shortly to take over while I hopefully sleep, we’ve been having to try and sort this in shifts, but we’re both key workers and desperately need some sleep. I’ve brought him downstairs and he’s happily playing on the floor. I assume that he’s going to conk eventually but how long do I let him sleep for today to try and avoid the same thing happening tonight? I’m feeling very low. Up until this last week he was a very good sleeper and now I feel like this might never end

Let him sleep for as long as he wants during the day. Mine always slept much better when they weren’t exhausted. He could be a bit under the weather? My dd had a lot of ear infections so screamed when we laid her down.

It will end! I remember thinking that every time it happened with DD. It is just a phase and he will go back to sleeping normally. Have you given any calpol?

With DD I think it was usually teething, or she was ill, or about to get ill (chicken pox), or it was just a sleep regression and she settled down again. The best thing we did was just admit defeat, tried to stay calm, take shifts and gave her loads of cuddles.

The annoying thing is once they have a bad night it can be a vicious circle because naps etc. are all off for days.

DS went through similar after his recent jabs, he was under the weather one day about two weeks after them, and I remember it was a Thursday night because the bastard fireworks woke him up at 8 and he didn’t go back to sleep until 1am. Then for a few days he was unsettled, had a rash etc, and was fussy with naps and night sleep. I gave him calpol and kept his routine the same, including naps times, and he went back to normal in a few days. Hopefully it passes for you soon!!

Thanks all. He finally went to sleep at 6:30 and woke up at... 7. And he’s still awake. I just don’t know what’s going on! I’m just going to try for his nap at his usual time after an early lunch, although he’s not eating either, and hope for the best. He seems ok in himself. I do think it’s the injections combined with teething which has caused this.

Did you have a better night last night @Moonshine160 ? You must be shattered Sad

Hi @tittie - he is now absolutely fine! He hasn’t napped on me in months (his choice not mine) and slept in my arms for nearly 3 hours. He’d had a temperature for days and came out in a rash that went as quickly as it came and now hes fine again and sleeping and eating like normal. I think it was definitely from the vaccinations. He has never reacted well to any of them.
