2yo takes nappy off as a protest against being put in her bed

My 2 year old (2yrs, 2 months) is still in a cot and is still in nappies. Fine with me and, I think, with her.

At the moment she is very resistant to going to bed in the evening. She wants to stay up playing with her brothers. When I put her to bed she kicks wildly, so much so that I can't get her sleeping bag on her. Even when I do manage to put it on her (I've tried inside out) she manages to take it off and at some point after I've left her, she takes off her nappy. Sometimes after she's done a wee, sometimes for no apparent reason other than stroppiness.

After a little while she falls asleep.

If I go in to put her nappy on, she wakes up and the whole thing starts again.

If I leave her, she wees and wakes up wet and upset.

What to do? I don't leave her to scream hysterically at bedtime. She just shouts for a while and then gives up, and that has generally worked fine. She's realised that taking her nappy off puts me over a barrel and although I am quite impressed at her negotiating skills I would really like to get some sleep . The last few nights she has ended up in our bed where she messes around and keeps us awake.

Any suggestions?

do you use reusables or disposables? reusables are harder for little ones to remove, especially popper fasteners.

Back to front and inside out? Worked for me...

Ds used to do this with his afternoon sleep and he did poo painting!

I used to put him in one of those all-in-one sleepsuits with a zip and put it on backwards so the zip went up his back and he couldn't reach it.

There was a similar thread to this a few months back, and someone said that the only thing that had worked for them was bodge taping the nappy...apparently it worked a charm!

mrsdarcy · 18/09/2007 15:58

what is bodge taping?

they are disposable nappies

Never seen all in one sleepsuits for 2 year olds - where does one buy them?

Thanks

You know the type of really thick tape you get from DIY shops for sealing boxes when you are moving, or splicing pipes together when plumbing?? Also known as a gaffer tape I believe!

Ask DP...he will almost certainly know.

DD will be doing very well to get out of that! TRying to put it on her will be interesting, and obviously you can't get it on any skin....but if you are desperate, it apparently did work.

Thanks Notyummy!

I'll give that a try. A friend in the playground suggested putting her in pull-ups at night time and making a big fuss about her big girl nappy. So I've got a Good Cop strategy and a Bad Cop strategy

mrs darcy, how much does she wee at night, cos a pullup wouldn't contain all that my boys seem to expell in the night. Just not as absorbant.

My boys went through phase (and occasionally still do) of taking nappies off at bedtime, but they were/are in beds, so then got up and either used the potty or weed on floor/bed etc. I used to go up every 10 mins or so, not speak to them, replace nappy, put them back in bed (change bed if i had to) but still no speaking. After a few nights of getting no additional attention from me, they stopped.

hey are now dry in the day but i still can;t quite bring myself to go nappy free at night

I don't remember where we got ours from now it was a few years ago but i say that type of sleepsuit to fit up to age 8 in Mothercare earlier this year.
