Is my toddler sleeping too long?

Hi all πŸ‘‹πŸ»

Needing some advice please and unsure whether it’s worth trying to see health visitor during these times or whether I need to.

My dd 17 months today usually sleeps 7/8 at night depending on when she wakes from nap. She wakes 8/9 and often I have to wake her. Then lunchtime she might sleep 12-4/1-4. So she’s sleeping like 16 hours most days... don’t think this is normal. If I wake her 2/3 instead of 4 she’s miserable. I also have to wake her at 4, when I last let her wake naturally she didn’t wake till 5;30 when she normally has dinner and we start bed time routine.

Today she woke 8:20 (after I’d woke her) took herself to bed crying crawled up stairs (I stand behind) then pointed at her bed. I think she will sleep till 4 ish or longer if I let her.

She’s otherwise happy girl, most people have said advanced, she’s mostly ahead on milestones too ect but I’m worried why she’d sleep that long and if I’m doing something wrong.

Anyone else got long sleepers? I know it sounds great ect but I’m starting to worry about it now. Especially as before lock down we couldn’t do things in afternoons. I already felt trapped at home. :( she really depends on these long sleeps.

Any help advance appreciated Flowers

I think the normal range of sleeping at that age is 12-16 hours/day so she’s still within normal. I would do anything to have my DS sleep that long. He’s 24 months and sleeps too little I think - 11.5hrs/day. But it’s only just under so I think normal for him. Enjoy it!

My niece was like this. She slept as much as she possibly could from birth. She eventually grew out of it but not until she was 3 or so.

DS (19 months) can sleep 13 hours some nights and then have a 3 hour nap but it’s more commonly 11-12 hours with a 2 hour nap.

I have five children and the last one had a similar sleeping pattern to your daughter. She is 18 now and has always chosen to go to bed early. Before lockdown when she was in school I would call her at 7 am. She would have a nap when she got in from school around 4 ish and go to bed by 10. Of all my kids she is the one least likely to be ill, she's a high achiever academically and very involved in extra curricular activities but she loves her sleep!

My dd woke a lot until she was 6 months and once in her own room something must of clicked. I just wondered if it’s a sign of something sinister ect or that something could be wrong. It does sound great but it comes with struggles like I said not being able to be out in afternoons ect. I don’t know whether to try and make her sleep less before end of lockdown as really want us to be out. It’s gone on awhile since she was about 9 months. She dropped morning nap but sleeps 4 hours in afternoon. Wonder what I should do really. Whenever I wake earliers she’s miserable.

Nothing to worry about! My daughter is 21 months & sleeps 12/13 hours a night then a further 3/4 hour nap in the afternoon.
Sometimes more if she's having a growth spurt or practicing a new skill.
I'm totally embracing it as I don't think I'll be do luck then next time around πŸ˜‚

Glad I’m not alone, can’t talk to other mums and most theirs don’t sleep enough but it was starting to worry me. Smile
