Changing from a cot to a bed

Hi all,

I'm just looking for a bit of advice, about my 20 month old DS. He is large for his age in height, he's been in a cot in his own room now for almost a year and sleeps all night. His usual bed routine is bath, quiet time for an hour and then bed and he goes to sleep not a problem.

However over the last month or so he's been waking up crying in the night because he keeps banging his head on the side of his cot.

Do you think he is to young for a bed with the netting rail or could he be fine in it now? His room is baby safe and only really has some toys in there with a baby gate on the door.

I'm following as my DS is 23 months and is massive for age and it's getting to big to be keep getting picked up over the cot.

I'm just don't want to ruin his current sleeping pattern as he's a really good sleeper and don't even know where to start with a toddler bed

I moved my DD into a full size single probably about a year ago, just before she turned two. Didn't use a rail or bed guard, but did pull out the trundle bed underneath just enough so it was a soft landing. But to date I think she's only ever fallen out twice! Didn't affect her sleeping particularly, but she does climb out and come.to our room when she wakes in the mornings now.

My DS has just turned 2. I took his cot side off at the beginning of lockdown. Naptime was the worst to start with, he'd faff about for hours before passing out in bed. Fast forward a couple of weeks, I put him to bed, a maximum of 20 minutes later, he's done faffing and is fast asleep.

He's not too young and I wouldn't worry about the guard unless you already have it. DS hasn't rolled out of bed once and all I've done is roll a towel up under his bedsheet to act as a buffer

Glad other people are doing it and iv already got one (was given it by a friend who no longer needed it) might give it a go today then as see how he is just dreading the whole waking up in the middle of the night to find him playing in his room because I have a feeling that is what he will do. Fingers crossed he still sleeps x

I'm planning to give DS a single mattress on the floor at 18 months as we'll need his cot for his brother/sister when they're born.

Ds was 17 months when we put him in a toddler bed. He was fine. Didn't bother with extra guards. Just put the old mattress from his cot on the floor for a few nights to start with. He fell out twice that was it. He loved it

DD1 went into a bed at about the same age, because we needed the cot for DD2.

She fell out a few times but it didn't seem to bother her. If we heard her, we just put her back in bed, but sometimes we found her asleep on the floor in the morning Blush.

The bigger problem was when she realised she could get out of her bed - she came downstairs to find us a few times. In the end we put the stairgate across her bedroom door for a while.

@chazabella how did it go and I've got the same fear off him in his room playing with his toys or letting the cat in to play with as he's tall enough to open the doors
