7 week old ds2 - sleeping no more than 45 mins at a time.

DS2 slept for 3 or 4 hour periods after he was first born. But for the last two weeks - he just wakes up with a pop and will not be put back to sleep for at least another hour. He's not hungry, not particularly upset, just comes out of a sleep cycle and won't go down again.

Also, ds1, has taken to coming into our bed during the night (understandable with new baby, and I don't mind if he sleeps there), but what with ds2 waking up all the time, he wakes up too, and now we are all bloody knackered.

meanwhile dh sleeps soundy on the blow-up in the sitting room.....

any ideas on how to combat the 45 minute cycle?!

Have you tried leaving DS2 to cry ? Had a similar thing with my DD. Tried breaking it during the day, he was exhausted but would not give in. My parents came round, I had PND! They sent me off shopping and just let her cry and eventually she went off. Its tough breaking the cycle.

As a rule ours dont come into our beds (as babies it was ok) do you think perhaps you need to alter that ? Might be too much to do both in one go. Not attacking your paenting just thinking of different alternatives.

have you tried wearing a sling during the day or putting him in his pushchair?

If your baby isn't particularly upset can you just ignore them with the hope that they get the message that nightime is not playtime. My dd used to wake at 4am at this age and would not go back to sleep. She wasn't crying but she did disturb our sleep. I just left her in her moses basket with the light off and she has now learnt to sleep through the night from 10pm to 7am ish at 11 weeks.

my ds did exactly the same - apparently its quite normal. He did get better and eventually he had longer naps I would not worry about it too much as I did and worked myself into a state. DS now 2.5 sleeps 7 to 7 but no daytme sleep.
